Vanarama National League South Play-off Semi-Final
Chelmsford City v Braintree Town
After Tuesday night’s excellent exploits, the Iron make the short trip to Melbourne Park to take on neighbours Chelmsford City this Saturday as they strive to take one step closer to the National League.
Like ourselves, City have improved on last season’s achievements finishing second on eighty four points, which is three places higher and six points more than last season. Their record this season is P 46 W 24 D 12 L 10 GF 76 GA 43 Points 84.
At home they have P 23 W 11 D 7 L 5 GF 33 GA 19 Points 40
The Clarets didn’t make a very good start to the season with only two wins between August 2023 and November 2023, but kicked on big time in the second half of the season from 23 December 2023 when they beat Torquay United at home two-nil, to finish the last twenty four games of the season with sixteen wins and four draws/four defeats.
They have lost five home games this season to Hemel Hempstead Town (1-2), St Albans City (0-2), Maidstone United (0-1), Truro City (1-2) and Worthing (0-1).
Defensively they have the second best defence conceding forty three goals, one more than Braintree.
Leading scorers for the Clarets this season are Charlie Ruff with nineteen goals, George Alexander with seventeen goals (6 inc for Slough, 3 for Dartford) and Callum Jones with ten.
The seasonal Christmas meetings between the two sides both ended badly for the Iron as they suffered back to back three-nil defeats.; Hockey, Ruff and Francis scoring on Boxing Day, Watts, Ruff and Carruthers on New Year’s Day.
As stated in my preview for the game on 1 January, the Iron haven’t won a League game at Chelmsford since 2006, although they did triumph there on the way to raising the Essex Senior Cup last season. Highlights of that game here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HHpUgcgZlk&t=125s
A bumper crowd is expected with a place in the play-off final at stake and segregation will be in place. After over one hundred and twenty minutes of pulsating action on Tuesday evening, hopefully the boys have found time to rest and recuperate ahead of this massive game. We’re going to have to do it the hard way now to reach the National League with Maidstone or Worthing guaranteed to be at home should we be successful in our quest on Saturday. We may be outnumbered on the day, but let’s create a party atmosphere and give the lads that extra backing to claim that all important win and end a lot of years of hurt on Chelmsford soil!
