Vanarama National League South Play-off Quarter Final
Braintree Town v Bath City
There’s no let-up in this remarkable season for the Iron as three days after the last League game of the season, the Iron welcome the team who finished sixth in the VNLS to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium – Bath City.
The Romans, like the Iron improved on last season’s placings as they finished eleventh in 2022/23 with sixty seven points. This season they’ve P 46 W 20 D 13 L 13 GF 69 GA 51 Points 73.
On their travels its P 23 W 8 D 9 L 6 GF 33 GA 30 Points 33.
Once again Scott Wilson last season’s leading goal scorer; was amongst the goal with seventeen, four less than in 2022/23, leaving Cody Cooke out front on twenty goals
The Romans made a good start to the season only losing once in their opening twelve games when they were thrashed two-six at home by Weston-Super-Mare on 15 August 2023. They had a bit of a wobble from 24 February 2024 to 29 March winning just once in nine games, and despite a last day defeat at Aveley, other results went their way to claim a play-off spot.
Head to head with the Iron this season saw us host on 7 October 2023 and drawing one-one. Wilson gave the visitors the lead just past the hour, but Aaron Blair would net the equaliser in the fifth minute of added time. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktJKKeH-D4A
The away game was on 27 February 2024 with the Iron winning one-two. Yeboah put the home side in front on fifteen minutes, but second half foals from Blair and a Coulthirst penalty brought the three points back to Essex. Highlights here www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8r6762txoY
Braintree’s success this season has been built on the best defence in the League conceding just forty two goals. They have recorded three more victories than their opponents and two less defeats and playing at home should give them the advantage. Having said that Bath have been pretty good on the road with just six defeats and seven clean sheets, but drawing most of their away games.
If the Iron are successful in conquering the Romans, it will be a trip to the Melbourne Stadium Chelmsford on Saturday 27 April to avenge the Christmas/New Year defeats by the Clarets.
