Vanarama National League South
Eastbourne Borough v Braintree Town
It’s a trip to the south coast on Saturday to play twenty first placed Eastbourne Borough in the Vanarama National League South.
Having just missed out on the play-offs last season in a final game shoot out with Braintree, Borough turned to Mark Beard in June this year to take over as first team manager. Beard’s early playing career started with Millwall, before moves to Sheffield United and Southend United with whom he had two spells. He then played for several lower League clubs and non-league clubs ending his career with Tooting & Mitcham in 2011 where he was player manager.
His managerial career started with Haywards Heath Town, then Tooting & Mitcham then Loxwood before his current appointment.
It’s been a disappointing start to the current season for Borough as they currently occupy the last relegation spot in the VNLS. Their record to date is: P 17 W 4 D 4 L 9 GF 22 GA 31 Points 16.
Their home record this season is P 7 W 2 D 3 L 2 GF 10 GA 10 Points 9, the wins coming against Hampton & Richmond Borough (2-1) on the opening day of the season and the same score line against Weston-Super-Mare on 2 September. Current form shows just one win in their last ten games with three draws and six defeats.
In the F. A. Cup they went out at the first time of asking losing one-nil at home to Worthing.
Leading scorers are Decarrey Sheriff and Zak Emmerson with four goals each.
The last meeting at Priory Lane was on 22 October 2022 when the Iron triumphed two-one. Kyran Clements opened the scoring on seven minutes; with Greg Luer levelling for the home side twelve minutes later. Baris Altintop would go on to score the match winner in the fifty fifth minute.
Braintree’s second four goal haul at home on Tuesday evening against St Albans City propelled them up to ninth place in the VNLS and just one point off the play-off places. Shaq Coulthirst bagging himself two goals, a first goal for Joe Grimwood and an eighth of the season for the in form Will Davies making him joint top scorer with Aaron Blair, to see off a lively City side with a clinical first half goal scoring display.
The Iron are currently enjoying their best run of the season with just one defeat in eleven games which came at League leaders Yeovil Town. Matches between these two teams have often produced goals over the last seven years with Braintree recording a seven-nil F. A. Cup victory in 2016 and a five-nil League win in 2019 both at home, whilst Eastbourne have beaten Braintree six-nil in 2021 and four-nil in 2020, also both at home.
Can the Iron consolidate their push for the play-offs with another fine win on the coast?
