Saturday 4 November 2023
Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Havant & Waterlooville
Saturday sees the Iron return to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium to play Havant & Waterlooville, who currently sit at the foot of the VNLS table.
The Hawks had finished tenth last season, originally under the stewardship of Paul Doswell, Jamie Collins stepped into the role in March 2023 where they missed out on the play-offs by five points. Having made a poor start to the season, Collins was sacked on 8 September 2023.
They are now in the hands of Steve King who had been in charge at Gloucester City last season, having managed several non-league clubs including Dartford over the last few years.
Havant’s record so far this season is P 14 W 1 D 3 L 10 GF 15 GA 30 Points 6.
Their only victory came at home to current table toppers Yeovil Town on 28 August where a late winner secured a four-three victory. Two of their draws came on the road at Chelmsford (1-1) and Taunton (0-0).
They were knocked out of the F. A. Cup at the first time of asking going down two-one to Bracknell Town.
They have the second worst goal scoring record and the worst defensive record in the League.
Of the fifteen goals they have scored Muhammadu Faal has seven of them with James Roberts and Callum Kealy with three goals each.
One former Iron player in their squad is former Bournemouth winger Sam Matthews who made eleven appearances, scoring one goal for us in the 2016/17 season.
Last season our home game with the Hawks was played on 13 August 2022 and ended in a one-one draw. Jason Prior had been sent off after just eighteen minutes, but the visitors then took the lead sixteen minutes later through James Roberts. The equaliser for the Iron came in the seventy fifth minute through Levi Amantchi. Gianni Crichlow played for the Hawks that day. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvsBibyOXsI
The last home win for Braintree was on 16 April 2011 when first half goals from Sean Marks and Kenny Davis gave the Iron all three points.
It’s a long overdue home win against these opponents. Despite going down two-nil to Yeovil Town last Saturday, the lads acquitted themselves well, a win here and we could be in the top half of the table come 5pm.
