Vanarama National League South
Yeovil Town v Braintree Town
It’s another long trek to the west country on Saturday as the Iron head to Somerset and Huish Park to play League leaders Yeovil Town.
Yeovil Town were relegated from the National League last season having gained promotion to the EFL in the 2002-03 season. They would go on to reach the Championship after winning the EFL Division One play-off final in May 2013 by beating Brentford two-one. They only managed one season at Championship level before being relegated and then suffered a second successive relegation. They returned to the National League after relegation from the EFL Divison Two in 2018/19.
Current Yeovil boss Mark Cooper was appointed in October 2022. His playing career saw him make over 130 appearances in two spells for Exeter City. The highest level he played was during the 1991/92 season when he played for Birmingham City. His managerial career started out in non-league with Tamworth. His longest spell as manager came with Forest Green Rovers who he guided into the EFL in 2021/22.
This season their record reads P 13 W 9 D 2 L 2 GF 26 GA 16 Points 29 with a home record of
P 8 W 6 D 2 L 0 GF 16 GA 7 Points 20.
They are still in the F. A. Cup having been given three home times where they beat Stoneham seven-one, Didcot two-nil and Southend United two-nil. They now have another home tie in the First Round Proper against Gateshead next Saturday.
Leading scorers this season are Rhys Murphy with ten goals, Frank Nouble with six goals and Jordan Young with five goals.
The two clubs have never met before, although the supporters of both sides have, in 1990/91 and 1994/95. Players who have played for both teams include Craig Calver, Anthony Edgar, Billy Gibson, Korrey Henry, Omar Sowumni, Lawson D’Ath, Brandon Goodship, Iffy Allen, Nathan Smith and Adam Morgan.
Yeovil are currently on a hot nine game winning streak in all competitions, so it’s going to be a proper David and Goliath meeting if the Iron are going to make it three wins on the trot following Tuesday evening’s first away win of the season at Hemel.
