Vanarama National League South
Hemel Hempstead Town v Braintree Town
Tuesday evening sees the Iron go in search of their first away win of the season as they travel to play eleventh placed Hemel Hempstead Town.
The Tudors of course are managed by former Iron manager and record appearance holder Brad Quinton who took over the reins in December 2022 and oversaw a VNLS position of fifteenth. Last season the Tudors P 46 W 15 D 15 L 16 GF 49 GA 57 Points 60.
He is again assisted by Barry Bolton and first team coach Mahrez Bettache who played under Brad in the 2017/18 season at Cressing Road.
Brad has overhauled the club during the summer and brought in several familiar faces to Vauxhall Road – Alfie Matthews, Josh Hill, Reece Grant, Arjanit Krasniqi and Josh Oyinsan. He has also added regular scorer at this level Joe Iaciofano from Oxford City.
So far this season they have P 12 W 4 D 6 L 2 GF 17 GA 15 Points 18; which shows that they have become harder to beat. Their record at home is P 5 W 2 D 2 L 1 GF 6 GA 5 Points 8.
They’ve had two impressive home wins beating two of last season’s relegated National League sides – Yeovil Town (1-0) and Torquay United (3-2) with the only defeat at home coming against Weymouth (1-2).
In the F. A. Cup this season they started off with a three-one win away to Royston, then an away win at Gorleston by two goals to nil. The next round brought a home tie with Woking which ended nil-nil, with Woking going on to win the replay two-nil.
Leading scorers so far this season are George Williams with four goals and Joe Iaciofano and Montel McKenzie with three goals each.
Last season, the game at Vauxhall Road was played on 14 March 2023 and ended one-one. Charlee Hughes (now at Aveley) opened the scoring on twenty one minutes, but Ansu Janneh would level two minutes before half time.
The last Braintree win at Vauxhall Road was on 21 August 2021 when a Luke Holness hat trick on his eighteenth birthday sealed all three points. Luke was part of the Hemel squad last season scoring five times.
Another stern test then awaits the Iron, but they will have gained confidence from Saturday’s two-nil home win where Aaron Blair netted his seventh goal of the season and Will Davies’ penalty, his fourth this season saw off a stubborn Weston-Super-Mare. For Hemel it’s their first home League game in over a month and they will be looking to build on two away draws at Tonbridge and Dover.
