Saturday 21 October 2023
Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Weston-Super-Mare AFC
After a disappointing midweek F. A. Cup exit, it’s back to VNLS action this coming Saturday and a home game with seventeenth placed Weston-Super-Mare.
The Seagulls are managed by Scott Bartlett who was a former player and captain for them and played his entire career in non-league football. He has been in charge of the Seagulls since October 2016, but having secured Weston’s safety that season, he left in June 2017 to take up full time role at Forest Green Rovers, re-joining the Seagulls in May 2019.
Last season Bartlett led Weston to the Southern League Premier Division South Championship with a record of P 42 W 28 D 9 L 5 GF 89 GA 32 Points 93.
So far this season their record is P 11 W 4 D 2 L 5 GF 14 GA 18 Points 14 which is two pints more and two places higher in the VNLS table than Braintree.
They have played five away matches this season in the VNLS winning at Tonbridge Angels (0-1), Bath City (2-6) and Truro City (0-1) and losing the other two to Farnborough (3-0) and Eastbourne Borough (2-1).
In the F. A. Cup this season they beat Truro City two-nil at home, won one-nil at Farnborough before bowing out at home last Saturday to a Toby Sho-Silva hat trick for Maidenhead.
They have eleven different scorers so far this season with last season’s top scorers again leading the way; Marlon Jackson has four goals having scored nineteen last season, with Dayle Grubb on three goals having also scored nineteen last season.
The last time the Iron entertained the Seagulls was on 18 November 2017 where the visitors recorded a one-nil win courtesy of an Ashley Harper second half goal.
You have to go back to 20 October 2010 to find the last home win for Braintree, that day the Iron won four-nil. All the goals came in the second half through a Sean Marks hat-trick and a goal for Scott Shulton, the Seagulls Dayle Grubb also played in that game. The Iron need to start turning draws into wins as they sit just one point above the drop zone which is a reflection on the number of goals they have scored so far, fourteen from eleven games, four of which were against Worthing. Having also not won away from home, it’s even more important that they claim three points on home soil.
