Emirates F A Cup 4th Qualifying Round
Braintree Town v Chesham United
F. A. Cup fever comes to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium this Saturday as Braintree try to make it into the First Round proper since 2016.
On that occasion the Iron were in the National League and had progressed by beating Bromley four-two at home, then in the First Round proper, thrashed Eastbourne Borough at home seven-nil which set them up with a Second Round tie at the New Den. Michael Cheek gave the Iron fans hope of further progress as he opened the scoring against Millwall in the seventeenth minute only for the home side to score three goals in seven minutes. Unfazed the Iron hit back again through Jack Midson to go in three-two down at the break. However it was not to be as goals at the beginning and the end of the ninety from the Lions saw off a valiant Braintree.
Standing in their way this time is Chesham United who play in the Southern Football League Premier Division South.
They are jointly managed by James Duncan and Michael Murray who were appointed in October 2018 having previously been at Potters Bar Town.
Amongst their playing squad is Karl Oliyide who played for Braintree in the 2017/18 season.
The Buckinghamshire side are currently lying in third place in their League with a record of P10 W 7 D 2 L 1 GF 23 GA 11 Points 23. On the road they are unbeaten winning four and drawing one of their League matches so far.
Leading scorers are Ricardo German, a former Crawley Town striker who has two hat-tricks already this season from his ten goals so far. Shaquille Hippolyte-Patrick also has a hat-trick and five goals, with Connor Roberts and Lucas Sinclair with four goals apiece.
Their F. A. Cup journey began with an away win two-three at Walton & Hersham, then another away trip saw them beat Farnham one-two, before dispatching Margate at home by two goals to nil.
They have also commenced their journey to Wembley in the F A Trophy beating Enfield last Saturday four-three.
The two sides met in the F. A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round in the 1997/98 season with Braintree making the most of home advantage to win three-nil. Their earliest encounters were between 1929 and 1935 in the Spartan League Premier Division when Braintree then playing as Crittall Athletic. They would meet again in the Isthmian League Premier Division between 2001-2003. In those League games, Braintree (Crittall A) would only register three wins and three draws.
The current day Braintree meanwhile are on an eight game unbeaten League & Cup run, but with five draws amongst them, but this will not be an easy encounter as matches in previous rounds against Canvey Island and Brackley Town have shown. With no midweek fixture Angelo will have the time to prepare accordingly whilst Chesham played out a one-one draw at home to Didcot on Tuesday. Let’s hope the prospect of a First Round tie will bring the Braintree public flocking on Saturday.
