Emirates F A Cup 3rd Qualifying Round
Braintree Town v Brackley Town
It’s back to F. A. Cup action again this coming Saturday and another meeting with Brackley Town who are currently in eighth place in the VNLN.
Gavin Cowan took over the manager’s job in May 2023 following their exit from the play-offs last season. Prior to that his previous managerial experience was with Telford United who he managed between 2018-2021. He began his playing career with Braintree Town from 2001-2003 making forty three appearances and scoring five goals. He played mainly non-league football but had a spell with Shrewsbury Town between 2005 & 2007.
The Northamptonshire outfit finished fourth last season in the VNLN with a record of:
P 46 W 18 D 15 L 13 GF 57 GA 47 Points 69
Their first play-off game saw them take home advantage with a game against Gloucester City. The game ended two-two with Brackley going through five-three on penalties. That gave them a semi-final tie at Chester where they won one-nil. They then had a home tie for the final play-off match having finished above their opponents, Kidderminster Harriers on goal difference in the League. Two Ashley Hemmings goals gave the visitors the win.
In the F.A. Cup last season they were knocked out in their first game at home, two-nil by Worksop whilst in the F. A. Trophy they went down to the Iron at Cressing Road by one goal to nil, Willie Clemons had scored the only goal of the game in the third minute and the Iron finished the game with ten men when Joe Muscatt was sent off on seventy five minutes.
Top scorers last season were Callum Stead (now Barnet) with 14 goals, James Armson with 7 goals and Levi Amantchi (now Maidstone United) who had signed for them after the F. A. Trophy game, with 6 goals.
So far this season their record is P 10 W 4 D 4 L 2 GF 13 GA 9 Points 16.
Their away record in the League to date is P 6 W 1 D 4 L 1 GF 8 GA 6 Points 7
Their only away win so far coming at Peterborough Sports by three-goals to nil and their only defeat was two-one at Scarborough.
In this season’s F. A. Cup they were drawn away to VNLN rivals Scunthorpe United and drew nil-nil, before winning the replay three-nil.
Replacing last season’s top scorer is Danny Newton from Boreham Wood, who has seven goals from twelve games so far this season.
The two sides met in the F. A. Cup at this stage in the 2017/8 season with home side Brackley winning comfortably four-one, Karl Oliyide scoring a late Braintree consolation goal. Brackley also dumped Braintree out of the F. A. Trophy that season, after a goal less game at Cressing Road, Brackley won the replay two-nil.
Last Saturday Brackley went down two-nil at home whilst Braintree gained a creditable point in a one-one draw at Aveley following a controversial second yellow card for Joe Grimwood.
As in the previous meetings, this will be a tough encounter, so hopefully a repeat of that Trophy win last season can see the Iron progress in this season’s F.A. Cup.
