Emirates F A Cup 2nd Qualifying Round
Canvey Island v Braintree Town
Braintree enter this season’s F. A. Cup with a short journey to Isthmian Football League Premier Division outfit Canvey Island.
The Gulls are currently fifteenth in their League having P 6 W 2 D 0 L 4 GF 10 GA 14 Points 6.
They are manged by Brad Wellmen who joined the club in 2013 from Chicago Fire where he had coached for sixteen years. He became Assistant Manager in 2017 before stepping up to take charge in November 2021.
Last season saw them finish in third place and make the play-offs where they went out to Aveley four-two on penalties after the game had ended goal less.
Their top scorers last season were Evans Kouassi with twenty three goals, Bradley Sach with twenty two goals and Connor Hubble with ten goals.
In the F. A. Cup last season they won their first game at home five-one against Enfield, but were then knocked out at home three-nil by St Ives. In the F. A. Trophy they went out the first time of asking losing four-one at home to Bracknell Town
They have not made a good start to this season but all last season’s top scorers have found the net Kouassi – 3, Hubble – 3 and Sach -2.
They reached this round of this season’s F. A. Cup with a comfortable five-one home win against Lowestoft Town.
The Iron visited the Movie Starr Stadium for a pre-season friendly on 18 July 2023 and recorded a four-nil win with goals from Nwachuku (2) Quantrell and Regis.
We have also met Canvey in the F. A. Cup before, in the 2000/01 season at the second round qualifying stage, Braintree attained a one-one draw, but were unable to make the most of their home advantage in the replay losing on two-three. At the same stage in the 1995/96 season the hosts didn’t need a replay to dispose of the Iron, they won two-nil resulting in the sacking of manager Peter Collins, in fact you have to go back to the 1964/65 season to find a Braintree win at Park Avenue!
Last season our F. A Cup began with a journey to local side Heybridge Swifts where the home side lead for a long period of time before Matt Rush levelled late on. The replay saw Braintree triumph two-one with goals in the first half from Joe Muscatt and Levi Amantchi. That victory took them to Hornchurch where one of their poorest displays saw the hosts run out three-nil winners.
This tie is a potential banana skin and progress would bring some much needed coffers into the pot as we look to progress.
