Saturday 9 September 2023
Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Farnborough F C
Saturday sees the Iron welcome twelfth placed Farnborough FC to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium.
Last season Farnborough finished in twelfth place in the VNLS table with a record of:
P 46 W 19 D 9 L 18 GF 59 GA 52 Points 66
On the road last season, they tended to either win or lose with an away record of:
P 23 W 10 D 3 L 10 GF 26 GA 28 Points 33
They had the fifth best record last season for goals conceded.
They had a good run in the F. A. Cup where they made it to the second round proper after beating Hayes & Yeading at the second time of asking, drawing one-one at home and winning the reply two-nil. They then hammered Swindon Supermarine away five-one, dished out another thrashing, this time at home against Biggleswade Town seven-nil, then onto League Two to play Sutton United away, winning two nil before finally losing at Wrexham four-one.
In the F. A. Trophy, they won the first game at Hampton & RB one-nil, before facing Braintree at hoem. The game ended two-two before the Iron went through on penalties five-four.
Top scorers in 2022/23 were Hisham Kasimu (now at Sutton U) with twelve goals and Mason Bloomfield (Now at Hampton & RB) with eleven goals.
They have replaced them with a player who was at Braintree last season and is currently joint top scorer in the VNLS – Alfie Pavey who has six goals already and wide player Ricky Holmes and Connor Cullen who both have two goals for the season so far.
Just like last season their results so far have been inconsistent with three wins all at home versus Hemel Hempstead (2-1), Weston-Super-Mare (3-0) and Hampton & RB (3-1). Their only point on the road came in a one-one draw at Dartford.
Last season’s home meeting on 15 November 2022 saw the sides play out a goal less draw. The last home game before that was on 14 August 2010 when Braintree triumphed three-nil with goals from Sam Lechmere, Kenny Davis and Sean Marks.
Both sides had mixed fortunes on their midweek away games with Farnborough going down three-nil at Torquay United, whilst the Iron earned another away point in a goal less draw at Tonbridge Angels.
A win for the Iron will see them overtake their visitors in the League table as they look to build on their last home win against then table topping Worthing.
