Tuesday 5 September 2023
Vanarama National League South
Tonbridge Angels v Braintree Town
Tuesday evening sees Braintree make their second trip of the season to Kent to take on fourteenth placed Tonbridge Angels.
Last season the Angels finished in a creditable ninth position under new manager Lloyd Blackman with a record of:
P 46 W 20 D 10 L 16 GF 68 GA 69 Points 70 which was just four points behind play-off bound Braintree.
Their home record last season was P 23 W 9 D 7 L 7 GF 37 GA 34 Points 34
Top scorers last season were Jordan Greenidge with 22 goals (6 of which were for Hemel and Welling), Devante Aransibia with 10 goals (2 for Chelmsford - now at Maidstone United) and 9 goals for Joe Turner.
In the summer they released former Iron player Craig Braham-Barrett and brought in Kodi Lyons-Foster, Gianni Crichlow and Joe Boachie.
So far this season their seven games have brought three wins and four defeats in a sequence of LLWWLLW. The only home win so far was a one-nil victory over Dover Athletic whilst both Weymouth and Welling beat them by the same one-nil score line.
They have only scored eight goals so far this season and five of those came last Saturday when they won five-two at Slough Town. With seven different scorers so far, Lewis Gard and Ruben Soares-Junior lead the scoring chart with two goals apiece.
The last meeting in Kent was on 28 January 2023 where the game ended nil-nil as it did in the 2021/22 season. Braintree did win there however on 24 November 2020 by two goals to nil. Second half goals from Johnville Renee-Pringle and Tom Derry sealing the points.
Last Saturday Braintree put in a top performance to topple table toppers Worthing with a handsome four-nil win. The addition of new loan players including last season’s top scorer Aaron Blair from Dagenham added youth and flare to the newly bonding side.
With both sides now having found their shooting boots, let’s hope it’s not another nil-nil!
