Saturday 2 September 2023
Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Worthing F C
Saturday sees the Iron welcome current table toppers Worthing FC to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium.
Last season Worthing finished in fourth place in the VNLS table with a record of:
P 46 W 22 D 12 L 12 GF 92 GA 72 Points
They would go on to play Braintree in the first play-off eliminator, winning that game two-one before losing the next game to eventual promotion winners Oxford City, two-nil.
Boss Adam Hinshelwood has been in charge since 2017, his second spell as manager following a stint in that role 2013-15. In between those years he left to return as coach to the club he once played for – Brighton & Hove Albion. It’s been a successful time for him winning promotion from the Isthmian League 2021/22 and establishing them as a VNLS team last season.
Their goal tally last season was second best in the VNLS, whilst only five teams conceded more. Top scorer last season was Ollie Pearce with twenty seven goals; Callum Kealy scored fourteen but was transferred to Havant & Waterlooville during the season.
Hinshelwood has improved his striking options have by bringing in Greg Luer from Eastbourne Borough and Joan Luque from Maidstone United.
On the road last season their record was P 23 W 10 D 7 L 6 GF 38 GA 31 Points 37
Last season they went unbeaten in their first ten games before losing at home, one-two to Farnborough. The next game saw them lose their first away game, two-one to Braintree.
In the F. A. Cup they won three-one at Slough Town, before losing one-two at home to Eastbourne Borough. In the F. A Trophy, they beat Weymouth at home four-two, then lost two-nil at Maidstone United.
As already mentioned, their visit to Braintree last year saw them lose two-one on 15 October 2022. Aarran Racine had given the visitors an eleventh minute lead, which was cancelled out seven minutes later by Matt Rush. The winner came in the eighty seventh minute with Alfie Matthews scoring from the spot after a handball in the area. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z_aHWMVI4k
The only blemish on Worthing’s record so far this season came in a one-two home defeat to Aveley where Jon Benton was one of the scorers for the Essex side. The other five games they have won – one-nil home to Tonbridge Angels , 0-3 at Torquay United, one-four at Slough Town, nil-two at Dover Athletic and two-nil at home to Weymouth.
Ricky Aguiar has already scored four times, Nick Wheeler has three goals and Reece Meekums and Greg Luer have two goals apiece.
Braintree’s woes continued on Bank Holiday Monday as they went down two-one at Torquay United. Will Davies with his first goal for the Iron gave them an early lead, but two mistakes from the normally reliable Jack Sims saw them go down to a late penalty.
This will certainly be another stern test for the Iron after a tough month of opening fixtures.
