Vanarama National League South
Torquay United v Braintree Town
It’s back to the West Country this coming Bank Holiday Monday as the Iron travel to the English Riviera to play Torquay United. The Gulls were relegated from the National League last season with a record of: P 46 W 12 D 12 L 22 GF 58 GA 80 Points 48, which left them in twenty first position.
Manager Gary Johnson was appointed in September 2018 having previously managed at Yeovil where he took them into the Football League, followed by spells at Bristol City, Peterborough United, Northampton Town, before re-joining Yeovil in 2012 taking them into the Championship via the play-offs in 2013. He left again in 2015 to join Cheltenham Town before his current appointment.
At home last season the Gull’s record was P 23 W 6 D 7 L 10 GF 36 GA 41 Points 25
In the F. A. Cup last season, they overcame Hampton & Richmond Borough having drawn 2-2 at home; they won the replay 2-1. That brought them a home tie with Derby County where again they drew 2-2. This time in the replay they were beaten 5-0.
In the F. A. Trophy they beat Chippenham Town at home 3-2, followed by another home win 4-2 against Taunton Town before losing 2-1 at home to Barnet.
Top scorers last season were Aaron Jarvis with 18 goals, Asa Hall with 9 goals and Will Goodwin who was on loan from Stoke City and now plays for Cheltenham Town with 8 goals.
They have boosted their attacking options this season by signing Weymouth’s top scorer from last season – Bradley Ash who scored 23 times for them. They released former Iron defender Ben Wyatt who is currently a free agent.
In their five games this season, they started with a draw 2-2 at Dover, then lost at home 3-0 to current League leaders Worthing before going on to win the next three, H v Chippenham 2-1, A 0-1 v St Albans and a 2-1 at Slough which puts them in sixth place in the table on ten points.
Our last visit to Plainmoor was on 17 April 2017 when the home side ran out three-one winners. Manny Parry had given the Iron an eighth minute lead before Williams levelled four minutes before half time. Williams would strike again on fifty two minutes and Lee rounded off the scoring on ninety minutes.
The Iron last took all three points from Plainmoor on 17 March 2015, winning in style five-one. Dan Sparkes was the hat-trick hero that night with further goals from Matt Paine and Ryan Peters.
Braintree currently occupy eighteenth place in the VNLS table on five points, one point above the relegation places. Every game they have played so far has been close with scores level or one goal difference between the two sides. This will be a big test for the newly bonding squad but it could also be the catalyst to get the team moving in the right direction.
