Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Chippenham Town
Braintree are home again this Saturday to take on Chippenham Town. The early season League table shows the two teams in eighteenth and eleventh respectively.
Last season Chippenham Town finished in thirteenth place with a record of:
P 46 W 15 D17 L24 GF 57 GA 66 Points 62
On the road last season their record was P 23 W 5 D 8 L10 GF 23 GA 38 Points 23
Their first away win didn’t come until Boxing Day 2022 when they won three-one at Bath City, but they finished the season well losing just one of their last twenty games, with nine wins and ten draws.
They did well in the F. A. Cup making it to the second round proper beating Sholing (3-0) at home, Met Police (1-2) away, drew two-two at Hendon winning the replay one-nil. They then had a home tie with EFL1 team Lincoln City who they beat one-nil, before finally bowing out six-one away at Burton Albion.
In the F. a. Trophy they won two-one at Hastings before losing at Plainmoor to Torquay United three-two.
Top scorers last season were Jordan Young (now at Yeovil Town) with eight goals and on seven goals were Joe Parker (now at Gloucester City), Alex Bray and Joe Hanks (now at Gloucester City).
The two sides met at Clockhouse Way on 29 December 2022 with the game ending one-one. Both goals came in the second half with Chippenham taking a fifty first minute lead through Young, before Willie Clemons levelled on seventy six minutes. Jack Cawley saw red for the Iron two minutes later. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlnMd6Uvjaw&t=32s
The last eight meetings home and away has seen only one Chippenham win, three draws and four Braintree wins, the last of which saw Gianni Crichlow score the only goal of the game in the 2021/22 season.
Chippenham started this campaign with two wins beating Aveley one-nil at home, followed by an away win four-two at Havant & Waterlooville despite Nat Williams being sent off just on half time. Then came two defeats two-one at Torquay United where Luke Spokes was sent off late on and United ‘s winner coming in the ninety third minute and last Saturday saw a two-one home defeat to Tonbridge Angels who also had a player sent off late on.
Braintree’s first away point was the least they deserved from their trip to the Kent coast last Saturday after a good early start saw Kyran Clements net his second goal of the season in the fifth minute from a corner, but Dover equalised from the penalty spot on twenty eight minutes. Braintree would go on to control most of the play in the second half without finding the goal their play merited. Ruthlessness in front of goal is now required to build up confidence and get the Iron rolling.
