Vanarama National League South
Dover Athletic v Braintree Town
The Iron’s second away game of the season sees them travel to Kent to play Dover Athletic.
Dover appointed former Iron utility player Mitch Brundle as manager at the beginning of 2023 and he just about kept them in the VNLS. The last fourteen games of the season brought two wins, one draw and eleven defeats.
Their record last season was P 46 W 12 D 12 L 22 GF 42 GA 68 Points 48 finishing in twentieth place and avoiding a second successive relegation on goal difference.
At home their record was P 23 W 7 D 6 L 10 GF 23 GA 33 Points 27
Top scorers last season were Alfie Pavey who of course joined us towards the end of the last campaign and is now at Farnborough and Luke Wanadio who is now at Dulwich Hamlet, both players scoring ten goals.
In the F. A. Cup they went out at the first hurdle two-nil at Ebbsfleet United and the same fate befell them in the F. A. Trophy where they drew one-one at Uxbridge, but lost the penalty shoot-out four-two.
Amongst their new recruits this season is former Iron forward Iffy Allen, he joins Olu Durojaiye who played for us in the 2018/19 season, whilst former Iron centre back left the club to join Sittingbourne.
Dover managed to do the double over Braintree last season with both games ending three-one. The first game at the Crabbe was on 8 October 2022, Chike Kandi gave the home side a first half lead before two goals in eight second half minutes from Alfie Pavey took the game away from their opponents. Baris Altintop would score a consolation goal with six minutes left to play.
You have to go back to 8 February 2011 to find the last Braintree win at Dover, Sean Marks scoring both Braintree goals and Adam Birchall netting for Dover. The last fourteen League meetings have produced eight Dover wins, two draws and four Braintree wins.
So far this season Dover have drawn at home, two-two with Torquay United whilst their two away fixtures brought a two-one win at Slough Town and a one-nil defeat at Tonbridge Angels.
Braintree fought hard against a physical Maidstone United side on Tuesday evening but went down two-one with former Iron midfielder Sam Corne scoring the winner. Angelo will be looking for a response from his young side to set aside the disappointment of that game.
