Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Maidstone United
Tuesday night sees the return to Cressing Road of relegated Maidstone United. Former Iron boss Hakan Hayrettin was relieved of his duties as the Stones struggled to compete at National League level last season and was replaced by former Iron loanee George Elokobi in March 2023.
The Stones record last season was P 46 W 5 D 10 L 31 GF 45 GA 104 Points 25
On the road their record was P 23 W 2 D 2 L 19 GF 21 GA 60 Points 8
It’s clear to see where their problems were last season and in twenty one of their forty six fixtures they conceded three goals or more.
Leading scorers last season were Jack Barham (now at Aldershot T) with ten goals, Regan Booty (now at Gateshead) with nine goals and Roarie Deacon (now at Havant & W) with seven goals.
Elokobi has replaced those goal scorers with two players who played for the Iron last season – Lamar Reynolds and Levi Amantchi as well as Ogo Obi from Slough Town.
Former Iron player Sam Corne is still at Maidstone.
In the F. A. Cup last season they fell at the first hurdle losing one-nil at Needham Market. They’re fared better in the F. A. Trophy defeating Worthing at home two-nil, then drew two-two at Notts County winning the penalty shoot-out six-five, then winning four –nil at Eastleigh before succumbing in the sixth round drawing two-two with Barnet then going out three-four on penalties.
They made a winning return to the VNLS overcoming Slough Town two-one at home after the visitors had been reduced to ten men in the fifty third minute, but last Saturday old habits crept back in as they went down three-nil at Bath City.
On their last visit to the Cressing Road Stadium on 19 March 2022 the champions elect won two –one. Jack Barham gave the visitors the lead on fifty nine minutes only for Matt Johnson to level a minute later. Regan Booty was sent off for the Stones a minute after that but Barham scored again for the ten men to take all three points.
This is a fixture the Iron don’t do well in with the last two Braintree wins coming on the road in the 20/21 and 18/19 seasons.
It was a dramatic finish to the Iron’s first home game of the season as they took on Truro City. The Iron held a comfortable two-nil lead at half time courtesy of goals from Toby Stevenson and Tom Blackwell. They were gifted a goal back by Jack Sims with a wayward pass before Truro netted what looked like a point saving equaliser in the last minute of six additional minutes, but the Iron showed the never say die qualities that held them in good steam last season and winning a corner from the restart, Kyran Clements powered home a close range header much to the delight of manager and fans alike.
Another stern test then, here’s to breaking the Stones hoodoo and getting some satisfaction!
