The Iron's opening fixture would prove to be a testing one against a Truro side that put 5 past Welling on the opening day. Angelo made changes to the starting line-up from the side that had lost at Taunton, in came Reggie Lambe in midfield with Leon Davies moving to right wing back for the absent Owen-Jones and Will Davies made his debut in place of George Quantrell. A fairly quiet opening with the home side better in possession came to life when Blackwell out on the left touchline took on his man passing him on the by-line and tried to shoot from the narrowest of angles when a cut back would have been the better option. Truro carried some threat on the counter, mainly through overlaps down their left flank, but the final delivery favoured the home side. The opening goal came somewhat out of the blue in the 23rd minute when a speculative pass out wide from Payne went straight to a Truro defender but he mis-controlled the ball and Stevenson was quick to pounce and dispossess him to run through on goal and fire across the keeper into the far side netting. Trro almost level straight away but Payne gets the ball away off the line with Sims beaten. Braintree get another chance from a corner with Will Davies and Kyran Clements attempted goal bound headers are cleared. From a long goal kick Will Davies takes it down well and rolls it onto Nwachuku just outside the box, but his first time effort lacks power. Three minutes before haalf time and the Ion double their lead, good interplay saw the ball played up to Will Davies he finds Nwachuku who slides it across to Blackwell who rounds the keeper and slots home. Nwachuku is the creator 2 minutes later dribbling in from the left he crosses for Leon Davis coming in at the back post, but it skims off his head for a goal kick. The Iron take a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.
Braintree have the first effort in the second half, Will Davies on the edge of the box swivels but his shot lacks power. Seven minutes in and calamity for the second week running for Sims, Braintree pass backwards as they are pressed by Truro's forwards, Sims has plenty of time to choose his option and unexplainably kicks it straight to a Truro striker who gleefully strides forward and smashes it past the hapless keeper. Truro have been in the ascendancy for most of the half, but the Iron break out and Nnamdi shows some good skill to leave his marker bewildered and Will Davies meets it but the keeper was in the right position to catch the header. Truro should have levelled in the next attack, the ball is crossed in from the right evades everyone and their player at the far post has a gaping goal to shoot at from close range but somehow he mis-hits it and it gets cleared off the line. With the away side looking likely to be next scorer, Nwachuku is withdrawn and Quantrell comes on. Minutes later and Beadle is replaced by John White as the skipper comes on to sort the defence out. The visitors keep pushing and Lambe blocks a good goal bound strike. With 10 to go the Iron look like they may have scored a third from Stevenson but the ref has awarded a foul to Truro. Lambe who has shown some neat touches in the middle of the park and threads a delightful through ball for Blackwell who outstrips the back line and fires home from the edge of the box, but he's narrowly offside. Lambe is then withdrawn and Tompkins comes on and goes to right back. Six minutes of added time are shown and Truro are still pushing, but on the counter Will Davies out paces his marker and spots Blackwell to his left in the centre of the pitch just outside the box, but the diminutive winger doesn't control it cleanly and his shot is blocked. Last minute of added time and a close call, but the Iron concede a corner. From that corner they win the header at the back post and are level. I think most Iron fand saw that coming and they deserved it for their second half display, but this Iron team found the resolve to go again and not give up. From the kick off they forced a corner down the left, Blackwell puts in the perfect curling delivery and there is Kyran Clements at the back post to power a header home from close range. Thirty seconds more and the Iron have got out of jail and a precious three points are on the board.
