Vanarama National League South
Slough Town v Braintree Town
The last fixture of the League season takes the Iron to eighteenth placed Slough Town and although the Iron secured their play-off place last Saturday, this game will determine whether they get a home fixture in the first play-off eliminator.
Slough Town have already improved on their points total from last season (49) but will finish lower than last season’s thirteenth position.
A poor run of form saw the departure of Neil Baker and Jon Underwood in November 2022 who had been at the helm for almost ten years. Their replacements are two current players - Scott Davies as manager and Lee Togwell as his assistant/head coach
To date their record is P 45 W 13 D 11 L 21 GF 57 GA 77 Points 50 with a home record of:
P 22 W 7 D 5 L 10 GF 33 GA 38
Their goals conceded currently stands as the fourth worst in the League and the Rebels fans saw no home League win for four months. After beating Taunton Town one-nil on 13 September 2022, their next home win didn’t arrive until 21 January 2023 when they beat Dulwich Hamlet four-three. Having said that, they have won three of their last four home games including a six-one thrashing of Chippenham Town.
Leading scorers for the Rebels this season are: Josh Jackman with six goals followed by Matt Lench, Johnny Goddard and George Alexander with five goals each. Ogo Obi who signed for the Rebels in December 2022 from Hemel Hempstead Town has nine goals to his name having scored five for Hemel.
The two sides met at the Dunmow Group Stadium on 24 September 2022 where Levi Amantchi gave the Iron a ninth minute lead. A Ben Harris strike on sixty three minutes meant both sides had to settle for a point each. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bu1qXZNVNJo
The away meeting last season saw an Iron victory by two goals to nil, Giani Crichlow and Stefan Ilic scoring the goals, Crichlow’s effort probably the goal of the season. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6ACiSejehY
Worthing’s midweek win over Cheshunt means they now have two points more than Braintree and sit in the coveted fifth place, which if things remain the same, means a trip to the south coast for the Iron in the first elimination game. Saturday’s games sees Worthing host Hemel Hempstead Town, whilst seventh placed St Albans City are home to Farnborough so it’s all to play for. If the Iron did finish seventh, then it’ll be a trip to Oxford City who travel to Bath City or to our greatest rivals Chelmsford City who entertain Taunton Town.
Slough’s recent form is indifferent with two wins, three defeats and a draw in their last six games, but they have nothing to play for, Braintree must ensure they don’t take their foot off the gas just yet.
