Vanarama National League South
Worthing F. C. v Braintree Town
After two morale boosting wins against champions Ebbsfleet United and play-off rivals St Albans City over the Easter weekend, the Iron now head for the south coast to face another play-off rival in Worthing F. C.
Worthing are currently seventh and occupy the last play-off place in the VNLS. Their record is:
P 41 W 18 D 12 L 11 GF 82 GA 67 Points 66 which is four points behind fifth placed Braintree, but with two games in hand. Fans following the Rebels this season have seen the most aggregate goals in the League from their forty one games to date, a total of one hundred and forty nine. The eighty two scored is the second best in the League, whilst the sixty seven conceded is the fifth worst. Despite conceding so many goals, they are also joint third for least defeats this season along with ourselves and Dartford.
Leading scorers this season are Ollie Pearce and Callum Kealy. Pearce had been at neighbours Bognor Regis Town bagging around eighty goals in two hundred and fifty appearances before joining the Rebels in 2018, he has scored twenty four so far this season in League, F.A. Cup/Trophy. Kealy who had been on Brighton’s books left the Rebels in February 2023 to join Havant & Waterlooville having scored fourteen goals.
Their recent form is the same as Braintree having two wins following three successive defeats, their last outing on Good Friday saw them thrash Concord Rangers seven-nil, whilst their Easter Monday game with Cheshunt was postponed.
Earlier in the season the Rebels came to the Dunmow Group Stadium on 15 October 2022. The visitors took an early tenth minute lead through Aarran Raccine, only for Matt Rush to level eight minutes later. In the second half a late penalty converted by Alfie Matthews put the Iron ahead and there was a late red card for Raccine in stoppage time. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z_aHWMVI4k
With only three games left for the Iron to secure a play-off spot, a win here would go a long way to achieving that. If they can secure a maximum nine out of nine from those remaining fixtures then it’s job done, one defeat could open the door for the chasing pack to overhaul them should they also attain maximum points, but with some of them playing each other, seventy five points could be enough for Braintree to claim one of those play-off places. All will become a bit clearer as to what is needed after this latest round of games.
