At first reading, this looks like a hammering, but it was anything but. Braintree made four changes to last week's starting line-up, Alfie Matthews (suspended 5 bookings), Chris Regis, Lamar Reynolds (injured) and Joe Boachie making way for new centre back loanee Jack Cawley (From Maidstone U) Kyron Farrell, Joe Muscatt and Levi Amantchi. The Iron started well and pinned Darford in their own half for the opening fifteen minutes. Dartford are quite a big physical side and although they were under pressure, the Iron couldn't create any clear openings. The nearest they came to open the scoring came from a long throw in from Cawley, the ball being headed on at the near post and dropping in the 6-yard box but bounced away inches away from Clemons at the back post. Dartford came into the game as the half wore on, but they too found it difficult to create any clear openings. They threatened from corners putting pressure on and crowding Sims and one occasion the Iron goal led a charmed life with the ball not settling for a clear strike at goal and Braintree bodies in the way until the ball was eventually scrambled away. The only other moment of note was a yellow card for the Darts Tom Bonner for an off the ball incident with a Braintree player.
In the second half the home side came at Braintree from the off and 4 minutes in Fonkue won what looked like a soft penalty. The Darts wide man came inside running into and across the area, White stretched out a leg and although the ref didn't initially blow, a big roar from the crowd behind the goal seemed to sway him and he pointed to the spot. Sheringham stepped up and hit the ball one wat as Sims dived the other. Darts were now fired up, Coulson attempted a drive from outside the box, it bounced in front of Sims but he managed to parry it, the player with the follow up shot is flagged offside. Minutes after that and Rush is sent after a ball inside right channel with Bonner hauling him back; the ref gives him his second yellow and he's off. The tiring Muscatt is replaced by Liam Davies who takes over his midfield berth. Dartford break on the right the ball is played inside to Coulson who is about 25 yards or so out, the ball sits up invitingly and the midfielder lashed a sweet half volley up and over the slightly advanced Sims into the top corner. Braintree try to pile forward in attempt to get back into the game, but still fail to open up the packed defence. With just over 10 minutes left, the Iron finally get one back; a Kyron Farrell corner goes deep beyond the back post where Clements rises to power a header home. In another attack there was a clear penalty turned down as a left wing attempted cross hits the raised hand of a Darts defender. Payne and the disappointing Amantchi are both withdrawn with Regis and Boachie coming on. Farrell picks up a ball centrally just inside his own half, bustles past a couple of opposition players and lobs one for Rush to latch onto, he looks to have timed his run well and goes on to beat the keeper to the ball and slot home, but the lino puts his flag up. Another close offside call sees Clemons pulled up as he attempts to pounce on a low cross. Dartford attack in numbers on the break and on ninety minutes secure the points when sub and former Villa midfielder Samir Carruthers curls in a right footed shot from the left side of the area; the lino had raised his flag earlier in the move for offside, but then put it down; assistant manager Steve Pitt is booked for his protest. Five minutes of added time and a second penalty to the home side in the dying seconds for another foul in the area, Carruthers gets his second from the spot.
For the most part of this game, there wasn't a lot to choose between the two sides, dodgy officiating didn't help the Iron's cause and the score line was very flattering to the home side.
Next up is the Essex Senior Cup tie at Maldon & Tiptree on Tuesday evening.
