F A Trophy Round 3
Saturday 19 December 2020
Havant & Waterlooville v Braintree Town
Having beaten local rivals Billericay Town in the F. A. Trophy on Tuesday evening, the Iron face a trip to last season’s VNLS runners-up Havant & Waterlooville. The Hawks flew into Round 3 overcoming ten men Bracknell Town by three goals to two.
The Hawks have made a decent start to the season and currently occupy seventh place in the VNLS table having played nine games and accruing seventeen points.
Along with Oxford City, they were the only other side from the VNLS to reach the second round of the F. A. Cup. Kicking off the season with a home tie against Chatham Town, they went through 4-1. Next up was an away game at Bath City which they won 3-0. Despite being reduced to ten men in the second half, they beat Cray Valley Paper Mills 1-0 in the first round proper.
They must have fancied their chances of progressing to the third round and a chance to come up against the big boys when they were drawn away to Northern Premier League side Marine Town. However, with the game goalless, Anthony Straker picked up two yellow cards in four minutes to be dismissed from play with two minutes of normal time remaining. Marine took advantage by scoring the winning goal in the final seconds of extra time to set up a home tie against Premier League Tottenham Hotspur.
Havant & Waterlooville’s home League record so far is P 6 W3 D2 L1 GF 12 GA 8 Points 11.
Last four home results (most recent game last) Won 2-1 v Oxford City, Lost 2-3 v Hemel Hempstead Town, Won 3-1 v Chelmsford City, Drew 0-0 v Slough Town.
Leading goal scorer for the Hawks this season is a player brought in from manager Paul Doswell’s previous club, Sutton United – Tommy Wright who has found the net ten times so far. Behind him on four goals is last season’s top scorer for St Albans City – Joe Iaciofano.
This promises to be the sternest test so far for Ryan Maxwell’s unbeaten Braintree side. Due to players being cup tied for the game at Billericay, Ryan had to shuffle his side. The home side took the lead after 66 minutes through Ruben Soares before Arjanit Krasniqi equalised on 79 minutes.
The penalty shoot-out saw four successful conversions from Gordon, Johnson, Renee and Clowsley, whilst Iron keeper Jackson, saved Billericay’s second penalty and their fourth penalty taker blazed over the bar.
Good luck to all the staff and players.
