Braintree Town v Welling United
Having played 7 games, Welling United are currently in 18th place in the VNLS table on 6 points.
Last season they were in 12th place on 42 points when the season ended.
Braintree’s postponed game on Saturday left them bottom of the table also on 6 points, but having played two games more.
It’s a welcome back to Cressing Road for former manager and record appearance holder Brad Quinton who took over the reins at Park View Road in January this year. He also has two familiar names to Iron fans in his squad in Lyle Della-Verde and Marcel Barrington. Another name from Brad’s time here is Mahrez Bettache who is part of the coaching team.
Welling fell at the first hurdle in this season’s F A Cup losing 2-0 at Sheppey United FC.
Most of Welling’s League games this season have come on the road where their record reads:
P 5 W 1 D 2 L3 GF 9 GA10 Points 5. The only game they have won was at Hemel Hempstead Town (2-1). Defeats came at Maidstone United (2-1), and Eastbourne Borough (2-1) and draws at Slough Town (4-4) and Concord Rangers (1-1).Their two home games have yielded just one point from a 2-2 draw with Billericay Town, whilst Chelmsford City beat them 4-0.
Top scorers for the Wings last season were Anthony Cook with 11 goals, Adam Coombes (now at Walton Casuals) with 9 goals and Bradley Goldberg with 6 goals.
This season four players have scored 2 goals – Stefan Ilic, Anthony Cook, Dipo Akinyemi and Lyle Della Verde.
The sides didn’t meet at Cressing Road last season and you have to go back to 5 September 2017 for the last League meeting here when Brad was in charge of the Iron. The game ended 1-1 with Phil Roberts given the Iron the lead with a goal on 26 minutes. The Wings equaliser came 10 minutes later from Jeffrey Monakana. Joe Healy was sent off for the visitors in the 89th minute.
With Ryan Maxwell able to arrange a late friendly on Saturday with Aveley, he saw his new team win their third game on the bounce beating the hosts 2-1. The climb up the table will hopefully continue as the new man in charge clips Brads’ Wings.
