Vanarama National League South
Eastbourne Borough v Braintree Town
Eastbourne Borough currently sit 7th in the VNLS on 11 points having played only six games.
Manager Danny Bloor came in a year ago and has overseen an improvement in results from last season.
Four of their games have been played at home. The results of those games are Dorking Wanderers lost 0-3, Chelmsford City drew 1-1, Welling United won 2-1 and Ebbsfleet United drew 1-1. They have won both their away games beating Hemel Hempstead Town 4-1 and Hampton & Richmond Borough 2-1.
Their FA Cup run started with a 1-0 win over Dulwich Hamlet, but they were then beaten at home 3-0 by EFL One team Blackpool.
Last season they finished in 18th place on 38 points.
Top scorers last season were Greg Luer with 9 goals and Charlie Walker with 8 goals, both of whom have scored three times so far this season. Leading the goal scoring charts this season is former Clarets winger Chris Whelpdale with seven.
The two sides didn’t get to meet at Priory Lane last season, so you have to go back to August 2017 and an opening day fixture under a new management team of Brad Quinton and Andy Porter. It was a winning start for the duo with a new look team playing attractive football. The game didn’t start well for the Iron as they found themselves down 2-0 after 20 minutes with Odubade and Pinney netting for the hosts.
The comeback was started by Scott Shulton in the 28th minute bursting through the midfield and shooting from outside the box into the far corner of the net. Three minutes into the second half and Braintree were level; a long ball over the top of Borough’s back line saw Phil Roberts race through and lob the keeper. Five minutes later and what turned out to be the winning goal arrived. Another through ball saw Oliyide burst through into the box and although his effort was well saved, Braintree quickly regained possession on the right and a low cross was flicked home at the near post by Billy Crook. Including an FA Cup meeting in 2016, this fixture home and away has produced four Iron wins with an aggregate score of 18-4. Iron fans will be hoping that this is an omen after losing their sixth consecutive League fixture at St Albans on Tuesday night. Having taken the lead through Romario Dunne just before half time, two second half goals from Banton and Weiss continued an unhappy start to the season for George Borg’s boys.
