Braintree Reserves travelled to the historic G.E.R. Sports Ground today to face March Town United in the Thurlow Nunn League Division One.
Iron's first team used to be regular visitors to this stadium, which still possesses one of the few large wooden grandstands in the country. Unfortunately it is said to be on borrowed time.
Attendances these days are far lower than when we first played there in February 1955. The gate was 55 with just 2 Braintree supporters and 2 player parents (may have been one or two more?). I am sure that Lee, Luke and Andy who run the reserves would welcome some more help on matchdays - there were no officials accompanying the team today and the sandwiches laid on in hospitality at half time went uneaten. More supporters would be welcome too, as the young lads are working hard in the name of The Iron with little recognition.
Iron took the lead in the first half when the March goalkeeper patted the ball out to Charlie Webb to head home. In a game of few clear cut chances the home club were gifted the equaliser by a careless cross-field pass that was duly punished. The home side's winger was the best player on the pitch but barely threatened our goal and in the end a 1-1 draw was a fair result.
The reserves stay 12th and will have a much tougher game next week when they visit 3rd placed league newcomers Holland, at the home of F.C. Clacton. With the Iron first team inactive that day perhaps we can take a better following there?

Iron on the defensive during the first half at March. Goalkeeper Harry Aldridge pulled off the save of the game from this header.

It's a shame that so few Braintree Town supporters feel engaged with the reserves. It's a perfect opportunity to watch local lads playing at little cost whenever the first team are away. I was at Stowmarket v Coggeshall yesterday and spotted more faces there that I've also seen at Cressing Road than were at March.
Wouldn't it make sense to give people like Maybanks and Corne a runout in the reserves if they are not going to feature in the first team? From the few times I have seen them play they are crying out for a few more experienced heads.
