Halifax put an impressive amount of work in on their website to preview forthcoming opposition. Among other Braintree related articles they included this piece on Matt Fry prior to last Saturday's game....
A key man for Braintree with increasing experience is defender Matt Fry who joined the club during preseason in June. Fry began his footballing career in the youth ranks of West Ham United at the tender age of 11 in 2009. During his time with the club he joined Gillingham on a one-month loan spell to build on skills and gain first team football. Fry made his debut for Gillingham and the Football League in the October 2009 against Milton Keynes Dons which unfortunately saw them defeated 2-0 away. Despite an initial tough start, Fry impressed his new club which resulted in a further two extensions, taking it right up until January. The defender played a big part in the away fixture against Exeter City after Christmas but a hard tackle saw him suffer a knee injury, leaving him out of action or six weeks where he returned back to West Ham in January.
After reaching recovery, Fry joined League One’s Charlton Athletic until the end of the 2009/10 season but returned to his parent club with a problem knee injury he had picked up earlier. But the defender joined Charlton once more in August on another loan spell which lasted until January of the following year. Fry made a big impression in his debut in a tough fixture against Huddersfield Town, scoring his first goal and Charlton’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat. Having made 32 appearances for Charlton and gained much experience with his time at the club, he returned to West Ham.
With mutual consent from both parties, West Ham released the defender in his quest for first team football. Fry then joined Bradford City in 2012 on a free transfer, making 9 appearances for the Bantams. The 25 year old made played a whole 79 minutes before being subbed in his debut at Valley Parade in a 1-1 draw to Port Vale.
Fry left the Bantams after a short spell with the club, making the move to Concord Rangers who played in the Isthmian League. After a successful start, Fry helped his new club reach the play-off final at Crown Meadow against Lowestoft Town. In an impressive 90 minutes, the Rangers won 2-1 gaining promotion into the Conference South. Fry spent a short loan spell with Dartford but returned to Concord before signing for his current team, Braintree Town FC.
