FOGGY START TO SOUTH SUFFOLK HOP
The weekend’s South Suffolk Hop proved to be very popular with fans although the English weather did its best to intervene, despite the date being deliberately set for what is normally one of the least disrupted periods of the season!
Almost 250 people were already in the Goldstar Ground on Friday evening when the Match Referee had no option but to call off the Felixstowe & Walton United v. Hadleigh Untied hop opener because of the fog enveloping the ground. Despite being a huge disappointment to many, particularly the home club, a comment on the Seasiders website said “faith in human nature prevailed with many who had paid their entrance fee foregoing a refund.”
Several hoppers travelling up from the London area for Saturday’s matches were then hit with travel disruption after heavy rain in the central Essex area disrupted both road and rail travel north. Nevertheless a crowd of 134, almost twice the home side average, were present at the 12 o’clock kick-off for the First Division clash between Woodbridge Town and Stowmarket Town. The visitors came from two down for a 2-2 draw.
The day moved on to Ipswich Wanderers who lost 2-0 at home to Kirkley & Pakefield after being reduced to 10 men early in the second half. 146 watched this match, way above the norm for league matches at Humber Doucy Lane. The final match of the Saturday trio was the 6 o’clock kick-off at Brantham Athletic where a bumper paying attendance of 170 (over three times their last home crowd) saw visitors FC Clacton leave with a 3-1 victory.
The next hop is the A11/Brecks event on March 13th/14th with matches at Swaffham. Thetford, Mildenhall and Newmarket.
