What an impressive list on our our latest fixture poster, with our next three home games being against Chester City, Luton Town and Halifax Town! Ten years ago we faced teams like Canvey, Maidenhead, Hendon etc. Mind you a cynic could also say "How the mighty have fallen"!

I have only been supporting the Iron for three years since they got promoted to the Conference. "Glory hunter" I hear you shout, Yes probably but what inspired me was that in the 1970's I went with my local town football team to Braintree for some cup match. My home town team is still languishing in the Thurlow Nunn League but Braintree has made this incredible journey. I admire they way Braintree have met this challenge and continue to surprise and delight as they become a force in the league and challenge for football league status. They are well led on and off the pitch, recruiting Alan Devonshire as manager was a stroke of genius. The only disappointment is that more residents of Braintree don't appreciate what is happening and go along to support their local team.

In 1990-91, Luton finished 18th in the old First Division, three points above the relegation places. That season Luton beat both Chelsea (2-0) and Liverpool (3-1) at Kenilworth Road. Cambridge United won the Third Division championship and were joined in the following season's Second Division by third placed Grimsby Town who were also promoted.
