nln24.com/news/story/peters-hoping-for-staines-returnIf this is right, why weere we all told he had left? Had wondered why he was hanging about the ground and on the pitch before and during half-time against Chelmsford. Great news if we can keep him, probably the best right-back in the league. Phil Starkey has played well so far this season so would be very harsh to drop him, tough decisions for Rod.

Easy decision for Rod, stick with Starkey. Peters didn't hang around wanting to move on in the summer and its quite clear he would rather be at Staines now given the choice!

I did think that of course, but cant see him not putting the effort in if he is needed for us.

I thought Ryan was quality for us last year, so much so I voted him my player of the year. I really don't think we should keep him at the club if he doesn't want to be there though. Seems a bit petty to be demanding a fee which is obviously beyond Staines reach. All the lad wants is to play football and if that's not for us then let him go. He's obviously not in favour as I see him in the clubhouse and on the terraces during matches.

Seems a bit petty to be demanding a fee which is obviously beyond Staines reach. Funny logic that. What well run Business would not attempt to trap every penny it can earn whether it be through the bar, the gate or via player transfers? If Ryan wishes to move but his club of choice is not prepared or able to meet the transfer fee then he cannot move. These boys earn money from the game so want to be treated as pro's. Therefore, they cannot expect to switch clubs willy-nilly like you can at Sunday league level.

I don't know what price Braintree are putting on Ryans head but surely wouldnt it be worth getting something rather than see him walk for free at the end of his contract?! If Staines think it's silly money then I'm sure all other clubs do to. He'll probably just rot in the reserves then do one at the end of the year for nowt. Whatever we get for him (money wise) we'll be making as he came to us on a free. He gave us a good year last year and in my opinion deserves to be treated fairly.

With all due respect mooresy25, a lot of what you're suggesting is circumspect and assumes the player concerned will not feature in the first team. I'd like to think that all our players are equal in the eyes of the gaffer, with those exhibiting the best form, ability and attitude always selected ahead of those who may be out of sorts physically or mentally. A player under Contract can't morally choose to play elsewhere just because they've changed their mind on things. I can understand that if a player wants to leave and doesn't have his heart at the club then that is a less than ideal situation for both player and club. I'd much prefer to see a disciplined Ryan playing his socks off with the Club getting approaches from all over the place, than have him sulking and begrudging with his performances then going down the gurgler.

Looking at the original newspaper article, it looks as though Ryan signed an extension to his contract and, at some stage, this was overlooked and the business of a fee arose when it was realised that he was still under contract. These days amongst the big boys in the League, contracts do not seem worth the paper they are written - players sign a 4 year contract and then are off to a new club 6 months later, but one thing is clear, if you freely sign a contract and want to move, then the club are entitled to some kind of compensation for the breach of contract, which after all is basically what it is.
However, I am a great supporter of Ryan. I thought he played very well in his full-back position and I rate him only just below Billy Burgess. He was useless when they asked him to play in mid-field, but he is entitled to say "hey, I'm a specialist full-back." He will be a vital member of the squad, provided he is professional about the circumstances of staying with us. Phil Starkey has been excellent as our current full-back and is clearly benefitting from being played in one position instead of all over the place, as in the past; nevertheless, if we did start picking up injuries and red cards, then Phil is the one most likely to fill in elsewhere on the field, leaving Ryan free to come in in at full-back.
