IRON HELD BY RICAY
Quinton screamer puts Iron ahead - before Billericay fight back to level
Braintree Town welcomed Ryman League Premier Division side Billericay Town to Cressing Road on Saturday for their penultimate pre-season match and shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw. Wearing their new orange and royal blue kit, the half-time interval saw Iron turn around ahead after a 30 yard screamer from Brad Quinton broke the deadlock on 44 minutes. The first half was competitive with Iron having the upper hand. Both Sean Marks and Danny Green had chances saved by the Billericay keeper. That said, Billericay started well and scored from a scramble after just ten minutes, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The second half opened with Matt Paine having his header cleared off the line as Iron started well, but Billericay got on top thereafter. After 70 minutes Billericay equalised when a a cross from the right flank was headed home by trialist Serge Mkoso. Next up for Braintree, manager Rod Stringer will be sending a Braintree XI to play Ryman League Division One North side Redbridge on Monday evening, 9th August, with kick-off at 7.45pm. And, finally, our congratulations to former Iron favourite Alex Revell who scored on his League debut for Leyton Orient today in their npower League One match at Yeovil Town.
With my thanks again to my man in the rain - Kim Cowell

Without being picky I believe the scorers name is spelt Serge Makofo.
Great strike by BQ for the goal. Not the greatest game in poor conditions (it's meant to be summer!) but still thinking positive for the Farnborough game (where we can hopefully be cheering on a new striker!).

Pretty poor display today (except for Brads goal and Nathan McDonalds performance). Almost as shocking as that new kit of ours...totally dreadful (bring back the yellow).

Yeah I cant stand the kit either, one of the worst I've seen!
Nathan looks good in goal, very solid and at such a young age he can only get better

Well, you can't please everyone, but I liked the new kit very much. Its smart, bold and distinctive, and much better than the wishy washy yellow and pale blue. I'm not too sure about the white left arm though! As to the match, the kit was the best bit on our team. Billericay were doing to us what we did to Dagenham and Redbridge - running at the opposition all the time, not giving their players any time on the ball. Whenever the Iron did get possession they either immediately booted the ball upfield, gave it away again with some dreadful passing, were bundled off the ball or had it just simply taken off their feet with better skill! Do hope we can sort this out before next Saturday!

Whether we like the new kit or not, we had better get used to it, as we are stuck with it now. Some of the older blokes in the club house looked very happy to be pulling on their newly purchased shirts, although there was a bit of a struggle to get the last bit over the beer bellies!
I suspect we may have been a bit over-confident against a team from a lower league and this may have taken the edge off our game. For me, we kept our shape well and our wingers did their job but the worrying thing was that Sean and Mike did not make many chances of their own and when they were each given a free header, they missed by a mile. I have already said elsewhere that we need a snappy little goal scorer to feed off the two big lads and I hope that the news of bringing in another striker (while Jamie Guy is out) turns out to be true. I fully agree that our goalie inspires confidence and he made a couple of saves just as good as Craig's from last season.

As well as Alex Revell scoring, so did George Purcell in York's latest friendly. No chance of getting those two back on loan deals, I suppose?

Would be a great strike force, would easily both get 20 goals each!
Hope Revell can keep scoring at Orient, never got going at Southend and after a few loans where the goals picked up slightly, settling at the O's and staying for a few seasons may get him back banging the goals in!

A photo of Alex scoring yesterday in next Saturday's programme would be nice!
