From Leisure FM's Stuart Fitch:
Braintree Town proved they are no pushovers as they drew 0 - 0 against Essex rivals Colchester United at Cressing Road.
Both sides were unable to find a breakthrough in a match which saw tempers flare on numerous occasions.
The home side started brightly and piled the pressure on their League 1 opponents. Midfielder Sam Lechmere struck a 25 yard volley which United keeper Ben Williams safely plucked from the air.
Colchester remained on the back foot in the opening exchanges but came close in the 15th minute when Anthony Wadsworth’s free kick went inches past the post.
The remainder of the half saw neither side take control. Braintree looked comfortable with captain Matt Paine commanding his back line impressively.
The away side nearly found a break through on the stroke of half time when Clive Platt fed in Steven Gillespie only for Paine to make a last gasp challenge to keep the sides level at the break.
The second half started in the same fashion as the first with both sides looking to keep possession.
On the hour mark the match threatened to spill over after a confrontation between Braintree’s Mark Jones and Colchester’s Ian Henderson resulting in both players being substituted.
Chances were few and far between. Braintree came close in the 65th minute when Kenny Davis’s effort sailed over the bar after good work in the box by Bradley Quinton.
The match drew to a close with neither side able to conjure up a winner. Braintree will no doubt be contempt with the performance as they head to manager Rod Stringers former club Aveley on Tuesday night.
