I gather that the news wasn't going to be announced until tomorrow to give the club the chance to inform the unsuccessful applicants of the decision but Aveley decided to jump the gun....

am surprised we are not recruiting from a higher level and have gone for the 'patto' option again................lets hope his player contacts are better than just 'step 3'. Personally I d loved to see Nicky Smith as boss..................

I'm not surprised Ash, as we've tried these 'up and coming' Managers before - TBH we seem to have had a lot of them (Managers) in the last decade or so. Nicky Smith? He managed Sudbury to 14th position at step 4 right!
Good luck to Rod. Upward and onwards for IRON.

Nice to see the Chelmo boys on our site discussing our new gaffer. Were I a 'City' fan, I'd be a little more intrigued by the 'local' people who applied for the Braintree job and were unsuccessful - especially after all the stories they told us!
As for 'a man from above' v. 'the up and coming', do we all want someone who's been there done that and thinks the game (or Braintree) owe them a living, or someone with a bit of fire and desire in their belly?
I think Rod'll do well and at least he'll talk to the supporters!

all fair points made fellas - with the Nicky Smith situation Sudbury actually did more travelling than us last year and there is a real problem to recruit players because of this issue. Nicky has many friends and contacts in the game is very popular amongst Iron fans - but as you rightly say oz does not have a managerial track record....
On the plus side Rod has a bigger budget than he has been used to (rather the opposite than say Garry Hill). I see their striker Tuoy hit over 20 goals for them last season so would not be surprised if the new gaffer makes him his first signing. Good luck Rod we are all 100% behind you achieving our goals.
Fans are gonna have to be realistic though and one could argue we are still in year one of the two year masterplan............
THE FUTURE'S BRIGHT THE FUTURE'S ORANGE...........
One last point it could be argued that the wage demands of a bigger name was simply outside of our pay scale..........hence Rod got the Nod..............

Good luck to Rod and his management team! A name i've not heard off but i'm sure he'll do well. Garvs is going to be a hard act to follow so there'll be some added pressure. I guess coming from a slightly lower level he'll know what players are out there and (if signed) willing to give their all to Braintree, hopefully he'll unearth a few hidden gems! If the squad from last year isn't dismantled to much and he adds a couple of decent youngsters it could be a good 2010/11. I'm guessing hands were tied a little from the point of view that money is tight. So called 'bigger' names would be looking for a nice wage packet themselves as well as money to spend. I (like many others) had not heard of Garv's but his knowledge and contacts from the lower leagues served him well. Any news on where he may end up next season? It'll be interesting to see whether Rod adopts the same training programme so that the boys are as fit as they were for 2009/10. I guess Garvs UEFA coaching badge helped in that area. Nicky Smith has had it tough at Sudbury. The league they are playing in is ridiculous (travel wise) and he's done well considering the ammount of players he's got through. I guess that knowledge (players) may have served him well but I don't think he's quite ready for Braintree yet.....possibly in the future. Here's to a succesful 2010/11. Good luck Rod!!

Good that 1 issue has been addressed Do we have any firm hand shakes from any players wishing to stay next season or are you leaving this down to the new manager,i'm keen to see who is happy to stay with us and how many players we then would be looking for. Did read in the local that George has signed is this correct ?I thought he had a good 1st season with us but was surprised to read that no one has come in for him so i would say we have 1 player as a yard stick and if that is the case then i could see a fantastic team next season. What does worry me is that every person has an opinion of there own and we may have seen good players last year and that Garvs seemed to have a good relashionship with all around him if the new manager takes a dislike to one of our better players from last year we could lose them and that what be such a shame because it happens all the time with manager/players. Could we plaese get some clarifcains on player we still intend on keeping

While I'm disappointed to see Robbie leave, I'm now 100% behind Rod Stringer, so much so, I've made him my avatar for the season and yet I wouldn't know him from Adam lol.
Would be nice to see (in due course) who's new and who's old in the player line-up for the coming campaign.
Go Rod, Go the Iron.

Think Smudge would be a great boss one day, my only issue would be that most of our players come out of the london area and im not sure how great his contacts are or how well he'd know that part of the world.
Fully behind Rod, he's achieved an awful lot at Aveley but he's got big shoes to step into after what Garvs achieved last year - not just on the pitch but behind the scenes as well!

Adam Bailey-Dennis finished the season on loan at Aveley so maybe he'll become a more regular figure in our side seeing as he's worked with Rod before.
I wouldnt be surprised if 4 or 5 of their players joined us, probably their keeper after Craig's public departure.

Think we have the perfect replacement in Nathan McDonald, has impressed coaches and fans alike playing with the reserves this season.

Agreed, Nathan has never let us down and I'm sure Tiny would love to come back from the end of the runway. He'll always be one of our champions!

Not a massive fan of Nick Morgan if I'm honest. We do need a back-up keeper though, heard some positive things about Billy Elvin from the reserves who has trained with the first-team?
I'm looking forward to the new season and I think a few of the Aveley boys may join us, I'm hoping Martin Touhy who has scored over 50 goals in the past two seasons will form a lethal partnership with George.

I feel Nathan needs a little more time to progress at 1st team level. Hopefully Catts stays involved with the club, as the work and knowledge Nathan has taken onboard will result in a very good number one postion within this club, or his own choice at a later date.

I'm hoping the squad can be fine tuned rather than being ripped apart, the danger with bringing in five or six players with a manager is that it can split the dressing room a bit but it depends on who of the current squad stay. As for keepers, would love to see Nathan given the chance during preseason - he's worked hard, turned in good performances for the reserves and is still only young. Not sure about Billy Elvin CM7, he hasn't been involved since the start of the season - mind you he's gotta be better than that other reserve keeper

Apparently he announced it on a social networking site that he was leaving. A great keeper with no brains.

Technically all he said was that with the reduced budget he thought he could get a better deal at Ryman league level, at no point did he say he was definately off. May well be that the new manager decides he's worth the same wages and will cut back elsewhere - who knows!
There were players last summer who thought they could get better deals elsewhere and ended up signing on again so stranger things have happened! As the chairman always says, its one thing being offered a better deal elsewhere, its another thing actually being paid for a complete season!!

It makes you wonder at what badly paid careers these individuals must have to make them feel that they have to flit between clubs in the pursuit of a few measly quid.
Logic would say that players would choose to play at the highest possible level. It appears that isn't always the case.

He did state 'I will be looking for a new club then' so I cant see him coming back.
He's a superb goalkeeper, who chases the money a bit.

As I was on here asking about Paul Goodacre, I thought I give one story about your new gaffer. After Dartford played and beat Aveley on their own patch last year Rod refused to let any of the players leave the field for over 20 minuets. It made the Phil Brown pitch rant look like a gentle telling off. We all stayed and watch in disbelief as he went round singling out ever player (included the Subs who did not even get on the pitch ;D) and screaming at the top of his voice, calling them every name under the sun. And I mean every name, most of which was you useless C**ts . From what I saw of him that day he will let your players know is the boss straight away and will not take any crap.

Maybe they deserved it, but its good to have someone stamp their authority on the boys I think.
From what I hear he's done a great job at Aveley nealry getting two consecutive promotions, so I think we have a good manager with alot of potential.

As long as the foul language is kept within the confines of the players ears and not audible to the crowd and in particular any Children.

He made a point of it being heard in front of everybody . He made sure that he humiliate every player in turn. At one point he even turned round to the watching crowd and told the players "look at those people even they think you are a joke "
I guess people show their emotions in different ways , he was just so pissed off at the result . We had just beaten them 4-1 and we had even gone down to 10 men at 1-1 . In his defense at least it shows how much he cared even if he may of gone about it the wrong way .
