Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Taunton Town
Braintree Town welcome Taunton Town to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium this coming Tuesday evening; this fixture is the reverse of our opening game of the season.
Taunton currently occupies twenty second position in the VNLS and are three points from safety, but with games in hand. Their record so far is P 40 W 9 D 14 L 17 GF 42 GA 64 Points 41.
Away from home their record is P 21 W 3 D 8 L 10 GF 20 GA 42 Points 20. Their away wins came against Tonbridge Angels (0-3), Worthing (1-3) and Torquay United (0-3).
They are the lowest scorers in the League and have only managed four clean sheets on their travels. They made a good start to the season only losing one of their first nine games which was at Aveley (4-1). They then had a two month spell between 7 October 2023 and 8 December 2023 without recording a win.
That poor run of results also them exit the F A Cup at the first hurdle, having drawn one-one away to Merthyr Tidfil, they lost the replay one-two. In the F A Trophy they travelled to Welling where the game ended two-two, but they went out seven-eight on penalties.
At the beginning of March 2024 Taunton announced they had been served with a winding up petition by HMRC, with players also not being paid, but the petition was lifted in February.
Leading goal scorers for the Peacocks this season are Ross Stearn with nine goals, Nick Grimes with seven goals and Dylan Morgan with five goals.
Our opening day visit to Somerset saw the home side win two one on a wet and very blustery day. The Iron scored one of the quickest goals of the season when in the fifth minute Nnamdi Nwachuku charged down a clearance from Taunton keeper Lavercombe, the ball hitting him on the backside and rebounding into the net. Nick Grimes levelled for the home side in the third added minute of stoppage time, before former Bath City striker Ross Stearn netted the winner on seventy two minutes.
The last home meeting with Taunton was on 25 March 2023 and brought with it the Iron’s first home defeat of the season. Two first half goals from Zac Smith and Ollie Chamberlain were enough to claim all three points for the Peacocks. The away game ended nil-nil so no wins for the Iron since Taunton gained promotion to the VNLS.
The Iron has failed to beat the Peacocks in the last three meetings with the 2022 game ending nil-nil. Taunton’s recent form has seen one draw and seven defeats, with the point earned last time out at Hampton & Richmond Borough, but as we found to our cost last season, they can pop up with unexpected results as Worthing and Torquay found out.
Our fifth one-nil away win this year courtesy of Tom Blackwell’s eighth goal of the season has closed the gap on Chelmsford City to three points, but Maidstone are keeping pace with us whilst Worthing are two points further behind. Both those clubs are in action Tuesday evening with the Stones hosting Weymouth whilst Worthing travel to Dartford. With a play-off place now secured it’s about gaining home advantage and one less game by finishing second or third.
