Vanarama National League South
St Albans City v Braintree Town
It’s the first of an Easter long weekend eggstravaganza on Friday as the Iron travel to Hertfordshire to play play-off rivals St Albans City. The Saints currently occupy seventh place in the VNLS table, five points behind third placed Braintree.
The Saints have changed their manager following David Noble’s decision to take up the reins at Wealdstone. He has been replaced by Jon Meakes who took over permanently a month ago. He has previous management experience with Chesham United.
To date the Saints record this season is P 40 W 19 D 6 L 15 GF 70 GA 57 Points 63 with a home record of P 19 W 9 D 2 L 8 GF 33 GA 25.
They have managed only three clean sheets at home, whilst being the League’s second highest scorers. It’ll come a no surprise that their leading scorer once again is Shaun Jeffers who has twenty five goals to his name, with Mitchell Weiss on nine goals and Girogio Rasulo on seven goals.
In the F A Cup his season, they travelled to Leiston and won two-one, but then went out one-nil away to Billericay Town. In The F A Trophy, they were again drawn away and were beaten comfortably three-one by Bishops Stortford.
The two sides met earlier this season at the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium on 7 November 2023 and City were swept away by a rampant first half performance by the Iron with goals from Joe Grimwood, Shaq Coulthirst (2) and Will Davies. The second half remained goal less as they Iron won four-nil. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG8ibkKsKnc
The last meeting at Clarence Park was on 7 April 2023 with the Iron winning two-nil, goals in each half from Baris Altintop and Alfie Pavey giving the Iron the points. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkcfAZsYkdI
Braintree have won the last four meetings between the two sides and will be hoping to extend that record and start another unbeaten run following last Saturday’s defeat to Yeovil Town. The Saints recent record is indifferent which reflects their season so far, having won two, drawn two and lost two of their last six games.
With six games to go and all to play for a win here would very welcome with both Hampton & Richmond Borough and Maidstone United on our tails with one point less but one game more to play.
