Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Yeovil Town
We welcome Yeovil Town to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium on Saturday in a third versus first clash which should see a bumper crowd in attendance for the biggest game of the season so far.
The League leaders and promotion favourites have been top for almost all the season, but the pressure of maintaining that top spot has showed signs of pressure recently as their lead is slowly being chipped away.
Glovers boss Mark Cooper is no stranger to Cressing Road having been here as manager of Forest Green Rovers in the National League days, so will know what to expect. He has a big squad with lots of EFL and NL experience which should see them over the line, needing eleven points from their final seven games as it stands to claim the title.
Their record to date is P 39 W 24 D 8 L 7 GF 68 GA 40 Points 80. On their travels their record is
P 19 W 9 D 5 L 5 GF 29 GA 24 Points 32 with losses to Hemel Hempstead (1-0), Havant & Waterlooville (4-3), Welling United (4-1), Maidstone United (2-1) and Chelmsford City (1-0).
They had a good F A Cup run this season reaching the second round of the competition. It all started with a home win against Stoneham (7-1) followed by home wins against Didcot (2-0), Southend United (2-0), Gateshead (3-2) before their first away trip to big bucks Wrexham ended their run by three goals to nil. They weren’t as effective in the F A Trophy going out at the first attempt away to Torquay United two/one.
Leading scorers for the Glovers are Rhys Murphy with sixteen goals, Jordan Young with fifteen goals and Frank Nouble with eleven goals.
When the two sides met earlier in the season on 28 October 2023, the Glovers won two-nil with goals from Matthew Worthington and Jake Hyde. That win came amongst a run of fifteen unbeaten games in all completions for the Glovers between 2 September and 14 November, they followed that up with a ten game unbeaten run between 6 December and 30 January.
This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides at Braintree and will certainly test the Iron’s credentials following our own fourteen game unbeaten run. Yeovil’s recent form has been their worst so far with one win, two draws and three defeats in their last six games finding the net just once in the last four outings in a three-one loss at home to Chippenham Town. Both teams have the two best defensive records in the League with the Iron conceding thirty seven (same as Chelmsford) and the Glovers forty.
An historic day lies ahead in what promises to be an enthralling encounter.
