A frustrating evening for the Iron as they failed to make home advantage count in a game of two contrasting halves. Three changes for the first meeting on Saturday saw Miccio recalled, with Ben Tompkins ill, Baris shuffled across from right bank to partner Grimwood in the centre of defence and Leon Davies returning to his natural right back berth, Reggie Lambe was reinstated in place of Alfie Payne and Charlie Wakefield made a rare start with Aaron Blair on the bench. Coulthirst has an early deflected effort from outside the box comfortably saved. The Terras first attack should have finished with them taking the lead, moving the ball quickly with first time passing and willing runners outpacing their opponent, the ball is dinked over the top of the Iron rear-guard perfectly into the path of Bearwish who from 8 yards somehow managed to lift the ball over the cross bar. Minutes later the visitors almost take the lead following a corner routine which is met with good header which sees Sims stretching to tip it over the bar. From another right wing corner, there's a flick on at the near post and several flailing legs are unable to connect and the ball safely goes past the far post. Weymouth are really taking the game to the Iron and another effort from outside the box is saved low down by Sims. The wave of Weymouth attacks keep coming and this time it's a former Iron loanee Brandon Goodship who fires his effort straight at Sims. Bearwish also has an attempt from the edge of the box, but again it's straight at Sims. Braintree have to wait util 25 minutes in to threaten the Weymouth goal again, Miccio is sent clear into yards of open space. puts in a good cross to Sears who has his back to goal, he spins and shoots, but his marker is able to block. Weymouth attack again and Bearwish again tries his luck from outside the area, this time it just misses the post with Sims beaten. In a rare counter, a cleared effort comes out to Altintop but it's a wild effort and sails over. As half comes to a close, the Iron finally muster a decent chance, Reggie Lambe on the right delivering a great cross which finds Blackwell in a central part of the box, but he makes a glancing contact rather than a firm header that is required and it goes wide of the far post.
The Iron Iron finally start to wrestle the game away from their visitors, but are unable to create any clear openings. Just short of the hour Reggie Lambe again puts in a measured cross, this time it's Coulthirst with the header but it's more of a downward attempt and the keeper is able to get a hand to it and away by a defender. The best chance of the second period then falls to Goodship as he is set up one on one with Sims on the angle well inside the box, but Sims charges out and parries the shot. The keeper is on hand again as the backline is missing on a through ball, and Sims sweeps up. Aaron Blair comes on for Sears. Weymouth have their third presentable attempt as Rollison slices his effort inside the box as Grimwood challenges him. Braintree are more threatening with Blairs pace, but they have lots of numbers back and crosses are intercepted or players have to run across the pitch trying in vain to find an opening, often shooting at the mass ranks of the Terras back line, Lambe does get a shot off, but it's too high. With ten minutes left and the fourth golden chance for Touray who meets a cross in the middle of the area can only put it into the grateful hands of Sims. Jayden Davis comes on for the disappointing Wakefield and his impact is almost instant. Miccio puts him away down the left flank and he fires in a powerful shot which appears to hit the keeper on his head and over the bar for a corner. Alfie Payne then comes on for Lambe who's prompting and probing had been lacking the usual edge and accuracy. Davis again cuts inside and hits a powerful shot aiming for the far corner but it flies slightly wide of the upright. Six minutes of added time sees the Iron try to break down a resolute defence, but no clear chances are created.
Two points dropped, but it would've been harsh on Weymouth to have gone home point less.
Next up on Saturday, the big one as long time League leaders who are doing their best to give the title away come to town, get there early this is going to be a thousand plus crowd.
