Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Weymouth F C
It’s Part Two of our head to head with Weymouth on Tuesday evening at the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium following the Iron’s successful win there on Saturday. Those three points for Braintree lifted them to third in the VNLS, whilst Weymouth remained in fifteenth place, still eight points above the drop zone.
The Terras record so far this season is P 37 W 11 D 11 L 13 GF 51 GA 57 Points 46 and on the road they have P 17 W 6 D 4 L 7 GF 19 GA 20 Points 22; their wins coming at Hemel Hempstead Town (1-2), Dover Athletic (1-3) and Weston-Super-Mare (2-3), Taunton (0-2), Dartford (0-1) and Aveley (0-2), the latter being the only team in the top ten that they have beaten on their travels.
The last time we played the Terras at home was on 11 March 2023 when the game ended goal less with Alfie Pavey seeing red for reacting to two bad fouls in succession in the fifty third minute. The last home win in the League was on 5 December 2009 with the Iron winning three-two. The scorers that day for Braintree were George Purcell (2) and Sean Marks.
We have beaten them at home since then in an epic F A cup replay played on 28 October 2014 when the Iron ran out five-three winners after extra time, with goals from Jordan Cox, Simeon Akinola (2), Dan Walker (2). Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUHhASn39w0
Braintree’s thirteen game unbeaten run has seen them open a gap of six points from eighth placed Bath City who lost to Chelmsford City on Saturday and more importantly keep the pressure on the Clarets whom we have two games in hand over. With eight games to go, it’s unlikely that Braintree will catch the faltering pace setters Yeovil Town, so the battle is on to secure a second/third placed finish which would mean one less game to play in the end of season’s play-offs and also a home tie for their first play-off game.
Braintree are also currently just seven points off last season’s total of seventy four points, third place Oxford City who won last season’s play-offs finished on seventy eight points as did Worthing and Chelmsford, so there may be more points required this time around to ensure a third place finish, what is certain is that there’ll be plenty more twist and turns to come.
