Saturday 16 March 2024
Vanarama National League South
Weymouth v Braintree Town
It’s the first of a four day double header tomorrow, with fourth placed Braintree travelling to fifteenth placed Weymouth, with the return match scheduled to be played on Tuesday.
The Terras stayed up on goal difference last season finishing nineteenth on forty eight points; barring a miraculous set of results from the teams below them, they should be safe for another season at this level as they sit eight points above the drop zone, with a record of:
P 36 W 11 D 13 L 12 GF 51 GA 56 Points 46 On their own patch their record this season is
P 19 W 5 D 9 L 5 GF 32 GA 36 Points 24. They have only beaten one team at home who currently sit in the top half of the table and have only kept three clean sheets and they are also the joint League draw specialists with thirteen one pointers. Their home wins have come against Dartford (1-0), Eastbourne Borough (3-1), Truro City (2-0), Slough Town (3-0) and Hemel Hempstead (4-3).
In the F A Cup, they overcame Highworth Town away three-one, before losing two-one at home to Bath City. In the F A Trophy, they went to Dover Athletic and drew four-four, winning the penalty shoot-out four-one, then travelled to Hendon where they lost two-nil.
Leading scorer for the Terras is former Braintree loanee Brandon Goodship with twelve goals, Ezio Touray has eleven goals and Tom Bearwish has seven goals.
Last season at the Bob Lucas Stadium the Terras recorded a one-nil victory on 12 November 2022 courtesy of a goal from former Iron centre half Dan Matsuzaka who now plies his trade at Hendon. The three meetings on the south coast prior to that ended in a Weymouth win (3-0) and two draws nil/nil and one/one, Purcell scoring for the Iron.
The Terras recent form reflects their indifferent results throughout the season; a run of three defeats were followed by two draws and a two-nil win at Aveley last Saturday, prior to that run, they’d won four on the bounce. The Iron meanwhile kept up their impressive unbeaten run which now stretches to twelve unbeaten, with the only defeat this year coming against the Clarets.
Tuesday’s two-nil home win against Dartford pushed the Kent side into the drop zone and kept the Iron’s hopes of a second/third placed finish alive especially as Worthing and Chelmsford both lost.
Some great attacking wing play against the Darts saw Shaq Coulthirst net his ninth goal for us heading home a Tom Blackwell corner in the twelfth minute. The only disappointment was the time it took to score a second which Blackwell did with a low shot through the defender’s legs in the fifth minute of added time.
With a not too impressive record against the Terras, this game is potentially a banana skin, but if form is anything to go by, the Iron should be looking to be six points better off come 9.30pm on Tuesday evening!
