Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Tonbridge Angels
It’s another home game on Tuesday evening as we welcome eleventh placed Tonbridge Angels to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium. The Angels sit four places and three points behind the Iron in the VNLS table.
Manager Jay Saunders who took over the role in May 2022, saw the Angels finish ninth last season and four points off the play-offs and are again in a position to challenge for one of those play-off spots this time around. To date they have P 34 W 12 D 9 L 13 GF 49 GA 49 Points 45
On the road they have P 17 W 6 D 3 L 8 GF 25 GA 30 Points 21.
They went out of both cup competitions at the first hurdle, losing four-two away to Haringey Borough in the F A Cup and going out on penalties away to Hythe, the game ending goal less and Hythe winning the shoot out three-one.
Leading scorers for the Angels are Jordan Greenidge with nine goals, Lewis Gard with eight goals and Sean Shields with six goals. Former Iron centre back Kodi Lyons-Foster has four goals.
Their current form is indifferent with three wins, four defeats and one draw in their last eight outings.
When the two sides met earlier in the season on 5 September 2023 the game ended nil-nil which was our third successive goal less draw with them on Kent soil. Last season’s home encounter with the Angels was on 27 August 2022 and saw Braintree triumph two-nil with first half goals from Levi Amantchi and Lamar Reynolds. In the second half Tommie Fagg saw red for the visitors in the sixty ninth minute and then Amantchi was shown a red card eleven minutes later. Since the double header defeat to Chelmsford, the Iron have gone six unbeaten with the only points dropped at Maidstone United. The home win on Saturday against Torquay United saw a resolute performance and a lesson of how to play with ten men following the early departure of Alfie Pavey. Tom Blackwell netted his sixth goal of the season to put the Iron back into the play-off places. Another win here will widen the gap between the two sides and keep the pressure on St Albans City and Bath City who both play teams in the relegation places on the same evening.
