Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Torquay U
Saturday sees the visit of eleventh placed Torquay United to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium. The Gulls are in poor form at the moment following on from last season’s relegation from the National League. Experienced boss Gary Johnson who has previously manged the likes of Bristol City, Peterborough United and Northampton Town, has struggled to find the success he had at this level back in the 2018/19 season when he guided them to promotion.
Their record to date is P 31 W 14 D 3 L14 GF 52 GA 54 Points 45 which is two pints less than Braintree.
On the road their record is P 14 W 4 D 2 L 8 GF 22 GA 28 Points 14. They have only manged to keep two clean sheets on their travels at St Albans City (0-1) and at Havant & Waterlooville (0-2), whilst they have conceded three goals or more in six of their away games. Only the bottom four sides have conceded the same or more goals than the Gulls in the VNLS this season.
Their last ten games have seen just one win at home to bottom placed Dover Athletic on 10 January 2024, with two draws and seven defeats.
In the F. A. Cup they started off with a comfortable three-nil away win at Wimborne and followed that up with a home five-nil thrashing of Hungerford Town before losing nil-two at home to fifth round qualifiers Maidstone United. In the F. A. Trophy they started off with a two-one home win against League leaders Yeovil Town, then won four-one at Frome Town before going out at Hereford United two-nil.
Leading scorers for the Gulls are Aaron Jarvis with ten goals, Bradley Ash with nine goals and William Jenkins-Davis with five goals.
The two sides last met on Bank Holiday Monday 28 August 2023 where the Gulls overturned a half time one-nil deficit to snatch all three points in the fifth minute of added time. Will Davies scored the opening goal on four minutes, Jack Stobbs levelled on fifty six minutes before Aaron Jarvis’ late winner.
The last League meeting at Braintree was on 29 August 2016 with the visitors winning three-one, the visitors races in to a two goal lead courtesy of Reid and Gallifuoco, before Craig Braham0Barret pulled one back for the Iron, Young scored the third Torquay goal on seventy five minutes to seal the points.
The last Braintree home League win was on 20 December 2014 in the National League when two goals in the first half from Sean Marks and Simeon Akinola were enough to see of the Gulls, Sim’s goal here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHHBUk3e5Bo
In between there was an F A Trophy win for the Iron on 10 December 2016 again by two goals to nil, both scored by Jack Midson.
After a rocky Christmas/New Year the Iron have now won four and drawn one of their last five games to put themselves back into play-off contention with just three points separating them from seventh placed Hampton & Richmond Borough. With Ward and Watt both being recalled by their parent clubs last week, the squad is looking a bit thin at the moment, although today they have announced the signing of yet another winger – Charlie Wakefield from Woking.
Can the Iron pile on the misery for an under pressure Gary Johnson?
