Saturday 10 February 2024
Vanarama National League South
Chippenham Town v Braintree Town
With lots of rain forecast ahead of the weekend, I write this in trepidation of another postponement. It’s another west-bound journey, this time to Chippenham Town. Chippenham are currently seventeenth in the VNLS table, four places below where they finished last season, but ten points above the drop zone.
Their record to date is P30 W 9 D 11 L 10 GF 40 GA 42 Points 38 and at home so far they have
P 16 W 5 D 4 L 7 GF 23 GA 27 Points 19, which is a typical inconsistent record for a team in the bottom half of the League.
In the F A Cup they were drawn at home to Hungerford Town and lost one-four. They faired a little better in the F A Trophy overcoming Basingstoke Town at home, but it took penalties with the game ending one-one, winning the shoot-out three-two. In the next round they hosted the team that dumped Braintree out of the competition – Gloucester City and beat them five-three. They finally fell in the next round to high flying National League side Bromley, but again it needed penalties as the game ended one-one, this time they went out four-two on pens, with ex-Iron striker Michael Cheek converting one of the spot kicks.
They are the second lowest scorers in the League behind Truro City and their leading scorers are Matt McClure with ten goals, Craig Fasanmade with nine goals and Caine Bradbury with six goals.
The two sides met earlier in the season at the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium on 26 August 2023 with the game ending goal less.
It’s just over a year since our last visit to Chippenham when on 4 February 2023 the Iron came home with three points following a two-one victory. Both Braintree goals came in the first half courtesy of Joe Boachie, Owen Windsor would score a late consolation for the home side. Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4es62S0AXVs&t=767s
Braintree’s three-nil demolition of Dover last Saturday left them three points off the play-offs and with a good win away at Truro before that, they can travel in good form against a team that struggles to score.
