Saturday 27 January 2024
Vanarama National League South
Truro City v Braintree Town
It’s a long trip to Plymouth on Saturday to play nineteenth placed Truro City who had been our first home opponents of the season. They are currently ten points clear of the drop zone having P 24 W10 D 4 L 10 GF 35 GA 36 Points 34. An inconsistent record which has them as sixth joint meanest defence in the League and joint fifth worst goal scorers in the League.
Their home record is P 10 W 4 D1 L 5 GF 16 GA 16 Points 13. Five of those goals came on the opening day of the season when they thrashed Welling United five-two, the other wins came against Farnborough (3-1), St Albans City (3-1) and Havant & Waterlooville (1-0).
They exited the F. A. Cup and F. A. Trophy at the first hurdle going down two-nil away to Weston-Super-Mare in the Cup and by the same score line in the Trophy away to Hungerford Town.
Leading scorers for City are Andrew Neal and Tyler Harvey both with eight goals, Harvey Greenslade has four goals.
Their last three games have all been postponed meaning they haven’t played since 13 January when they lost at home by four goals to one against Worthing. Prior to that game they had won four on the trot.
That early season meeting was on 12 August 2023 and proved to be very entertaining as Braintree edged it three-two. Toby Stevenson opened the scoring for the Iron on twenty two minutes after robbing a defender in the box to fire home. Tom Blackwell doubled the lead a few minutes before half time following a throw in down the left, the ball was played inside and a deft touch saw Blackwell run across the area before calmly tucking the ball into the net. The visitors would reduce the deficit seven minutes into the second half through Greenslade and then levelled in the sixth minute of added time to break home fans hearts, but the Iron rallied again and Kyran Clements heading home from close range from an in-swinging corner. Our last visit to Truro was on 21 April 2018 when Brad Quinton’s side recorded a two-one win with goals for Ben Wyatt and Dan Thompson. The two goals can be seen here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXSGygAIJ-U www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JfcThIKAJk
Having fallen foul of the frost for the last two home games, Braintree took a valuable point from play-off hopefuls Maidstone on Tuesday evening which keeps them in thirteenth place in the VNLS, seven points off the play-off places. There’s more rain forecast in the West Country on Wednesday and Thursday before respite from the elements on Friday and Saturday. Hopefully the lads will return with their first away win this year.
