Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Taunton Town
Should the game go ahead, Braintree Town welcome Taunton Town to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium this coming Saturday. This fixture is the reverse of our opening game of the season.
Taunton currently occupy twentieth position in the VNLS and are six points above the relegation placed teams. Their record so far is P 24 W 7 D 9 L8 GF 29 GA 35 Points 30.
Away from home their record is P 12 W 1 D 5 L 6 GF 12 GA 25 Points 8. Their only away win came at Tonbridge Angels (0-3), they were leading two-one at Easbourne Borough back on 2 December 2023, but the game was abandoned at half time due to fog.
They have the second lowest number of goals scored in the League but also have the sixth joint best defensive record in the League. They made a good start to the season only losing one of their first nine games which was at Aveley (4-1), but form has dipped of late with just one win in their last sixteen games which came on 9 December 2023 when they beat Farnorough at home - four-nil.
That poor run of results also them exit the F A Cup at the first hurdle, having drawn one-one away to Merthyr Tidfil, they lost the replay one-two. In the F A Trophy they travelled to Welling where the game ended two-two, but they went out seven-eight on penalties.
Leading goal scorers for the\ peacock this season are Ross Stearn with eight goals, Dylan Morgan with five goals and Ollie Chamberlain with three goals.
Our opening day visit to Somerset saw the home side win two one on a wet and very blustery day. The Iron scored one of the quickest goals of the season when in the fifth Nnamdi Nwachuku charged down a clearance from Taunton keeper Lavercombe, the ball hitting him on the backside and rebounding into the net. Nick Grimes levelled for the home side in the third added minute of stoppage time, before former Bath City striker Ross Stearn netted the winner on seventy two minutes.
The last home meeting with Taunton was on 25 March 2023 and brought with it the Iron’s first home defeat of the season. Two first half goals from Zac Smith and Ollie Chamberlain were enough to claim all three points for the Peacocks. The away game ended nil-nil so no wins for the Iron since Taunton gained promotion to the VNLS.
With Braintree not having played since their impressive three-one win over Hampton & Richmond Borough on 6 January 2024, the lads should be chomping at the bit to take their first three points haul against the Somerset side.
