Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Weymouth F C
Tuesday sees a return to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium for the re-arranged fixture with Weymouth F C, who currently sit in nineteenth place in the VNLS, that is the same position that they finished in the 2022/23 season.
Manager Bobby Wilkinson was appointed in September 2022 having previously managed at Hungerford Town, Wealdstone and Bracknell Town. He undertook a major overhaul of the playing squad this past summer bringing in amongst others, Brandon Goodship from Salisbury City who had a brief loan spell with the Iron on the 2016/17 whilst on the books of AFC Bournemouth.
The Terras record so far this season is P 27 W 7 D 11 L 9 GF 35 GA 40 Points 32 and on the road they have P 13 W 3 D 4 L 6 GF 14 GA 19 Points 13; their wins coming at Hemel Hempstead Town (1-2), Dover Athletic (1-3) and Weston-Super-Mare (2-3).
In the F A Cup they started off with a three-nil away win against Highworth Town, but were then beaten two-one at home in the next round against Bath City. In the F A Trophy they knocked out Dover away on penalties after the game had ended four-four. Their next tie took them to Hendon where they went out two-nil.
Leading scorers for the Terras this season are Ezio Touray with nine goals, Brandon Goodship with eight goals and Tom Bearwish with six goals.
The last time we played the Terras at home was on 11 March 2023 when the game ended goal less with Alfie Pavey seeing red for reacting to two bad fouls in succession in the fifty third minute. The last home win in the League was on 5 December 2009 with the Iron winning three-two. The scorers that day for Braintree were George Purcell (2) and Sean Marks.
We have beaten them at home since then in an epic F A cup replay played on 28 October 2014 when the Iron ran out five-three winners after extra time, with goals from Jordan Cox, Simeon Akinola (2), Dan Walker (2). Highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUHhASn39w0
The Terras are one of the lowest scoring teams in the VNLS along with the five teams below them and they have the second most draws in the League.
The Iron were back to winning ways with an impressive three-one win against then second placed Hampton & Richmond Borough last time out and will be looking to pick up maximum points this week to close the four point gap to seventh place. It will also give Alfie Pavey the chance to make amends for his shortcomings on his first game on his return to the club.
