Vanarama National League South
Chelmsford City v Braintree Town
It’s the return fixture of the festive season as Braintree Town seek to avenge their underwhelming Boxing Day performance against our noisy neighbours Chelmsford City. That win for the Clarets cemented their seventh place in the VNLS whilst Braintree dropped to eleventh, four points behind them.
The Clarets were deserved winners last Monday and backed up their good record away from Melbourne Park. However, their home record does make such good reading, they have a record of
P 12 W 3 D 5 L 4 GF 13 GA 14 Points 14
Their last home game on 23 December where they beat Torquay United two-nil, was their first home win since 28 August when they beat Eastbourne Borough (1-0) and their only other home win was their opening day one-nil defeat of Farnborough.
Having said that, Braintree’s away form has been a thorn in their side all season with a mixture of good displays often not receiving the just rewards alongside some lesser performances, they have P 12 W 2 D 4 L 6 GF 10 GA 16 Points 10.
The two wins came at Hemel Hempstead on 24 October (0-2) and Dartford on 21 November (0-2).
Last season it was Chelmsford who hosted first on 26 December 2022 and ran out winners two goals to nil, Tom Blackwell opening the scoring on three minutes and Iron old boy Reece Grant sealing the points on seventy seven minutes.
You have to back more than the 13 years since our last home win against the Clarets to find an Iron League victory on Chelmsford soil. It came on 17 April 2006 when both sides were in the Ryman League Premier Division, the Iron won two-nil that day to secure the League title. The goal scorers were James Hawes and Eugene Ofori in front of a crowd of 1495.
No doubt there will be another bumper turn out on Monday, it’s time to end 17+ years of hurt!
