Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Chelmsford City
After a day of peace on earth and goodwill to all men, it’s the traditional Boxing Day fayre on Tuesday as we entertain our closest rivals Chelmsford City and the gloves will be off.
The Clarets impressive home win against Torquay United on Saturday saw them replace the Iron to take seventh spot in the VNLS table with a record of: P 23 W 9 D 8 L 6 GF 32 GA 25 Pts 35.
The Clarets have fared better on their travels this season having P 11 W 6 D 3 L 2 GF 19 GA 11 Points 21.
The two defeats came at Torquay United (2-1) and St Albans City (2-1) when they were down to ten men after Luke Jenkins was sent off on twenty three minutes.
In the F A Cup they needed replays in every game drawing three-three at Ware Town and winning the replay two-one, then they drew two-two at Bromsgrove Sporting, winning the replay three-nil. They then drew two-two at home with Whitby Town and lost the replay three-one.
They remain in this season’s F A Trophy having won nil-two at Harborough Town and nil-one at Oxford City. They will host the winners of Wealdstone v Billericay Town in the fourth round.
Leading scorers for the Clarets this season are Callum Jones with nine goals and Charlie Ruff with five goals.
Former Iron players in their squad are Cameron James, Henry Ochieng and Mo Bettamer, whilst Tom Blackwell will make his first appearance against his former employers for the Iron.
The home game last season saw the Iron twice come from behind in a thrilling two-two draw. In fact it was Tom Blackwell who opened the scoring for the Clarets on twenty three minutes with a header! Kyran Clements levelled on the stroke of half time finishing off a John White overhead kick from close range. Former Iron striker Reece Grant then put the Clarets ahead again four minutes into the second half picking up a long trough ball, Sims slipped as he came to meet him giving Grant time to coolly slot the ball the ball home. On fifty six minutes, the Iron were level again with a goal of the season contender from Lamar Reynolds, picking up a headed clearance outside the box, he took one touch o take it away from the onrushing defender before spanking a rising half volley with the outside of his right boot into the top corner of the net. The Essex Senior Cup apart, this is not a fixture the Iron have won in over thirteen years, the last one coming on 28 August 2010 when Sean Marks (2) and Kenny Davis were the scorers. In the ten meetings since that game, Braintree have managed just five draws.
Saturday saw the Iron go down to a late penalty at Farnborough after dominating the game, but not taking a glut of good chances. Hopefully the lads will find their shooting boots and give the home fans a long overdue home win against their neighbours and leap frog them back into the play-off places.
