Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Aveley
Saturday sees a welcome return to the Rare Breed Meat Company Stadium a succession of away fixtures. Our visitors are Aveley who currently sit in fifth place in the VNLS.
Our Essex neighbours having a good season in their first season at this level under former Concord boss Danny Scopes who worked with the Cowley brothers as they rose through the Leagues.
Their record to date is P 22 W 10 D 5 L 7 GF 34 GA 27 Points 35 which is four points more than the Iron who currently sit in ninth place.
On the road their record is P 10 W 4 D 2 L 4 GF 11 GA 13 Points 14 with wins at Worthing (1-2), Maidstone (0-1), Havant & W (1-4) and St Albans (0-1). Tire last two League away games ended in one-one draws with Tonbridge Angels and Weymouth.
Leading scorers for Aveley this season is Siju Odelusi with eight goals, Jon Bemton with 6 goals and former Iron striker Matt Rush (now at Maidstone U) with six goals.
They reached the fourth qualifying round of this seasons F A Cup after having replays in every round. They knocked out Kings Lynn Town four-nil at home after a nil-nil draw, then won an away replay at AFC Hornchurch two-one after a two-two draw, before going our four-nil at Barnet having held them two-two at home, despite being down to nine men after red cards in the 77th and 86th minutes.
Their F A Trophy journey continues beating St Ives two-one at home and last Saturday they had to go to penalties after drawing one-one with Hungerford Town, winning the shoot-out seven-six.
This is our first return fixture of the season having drawn one-one at Aveley on 23 September 2023. The Iron dominated the first twenty minutes of that game and were rewarded with a Mat Carson strike in the fifth minute. There then followed a bizarre red card for Joe Grimwood before the second half kicked off. The centre back had received a blow to the face in the first half which required a long period of treatment to stop the blood flow from his nose. As he came out for the second half it was clear that there was still a problem and he got further attention before entering the pitch. The opposition leapt up to complain to the linesman and the game was stopped and Joe who had been given a yellow card in the first half was then shown a second and then a red for entering play without the referee’s permission. Braintree battled hard and countered a few times, but Matt Rush levelled from close range after Sims had pushed the ball away in his direction.
Aveley’s current League form has seen them drop off the pace recently with three draws and three defeats in their last six fixtures, whist the Iron have won four and lost two, the defeats coming on the road at Eastbourne and Slough. A home win could propel Braintree back into the play-off places, can they score four for the fourth home game running?
