Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Welling United
After a disappointing away day in Sussex on Saturday, the Iron are back at home on Tuesday evening hosting twenty second placed Welling United.
The Kent side recruited a new manager in June this year appointing former Eastbourne boss Danny Bloor who had spent three years with the Sports. Bloor has had a massive clear out during the summer releasing former Iron players Manny Parry, Christie Pattison and Sam Cox as they try to improve on last season’s sixteenth placed finish in the VNLS. Top scorer Adebayo Azeez also moved on to Billericay Town.
Their record so far this season is P17 W 3 D 7 L 7 GF19 GA 29 Points16
On the road it’s P 8 W 1 D 3 L 4 GF 9 GA 18 Points 6. Their only away win was against Tonbridge Angels at the end of August, whist they secured a point at Eastbourne Borough, Weymouth and Dover. However they haven’t fared well on their long distance travels going down five-two at Truro City and five-one at Torquay United.
Their F. A. Cup run this season saw them eliminated at the fourth qualifying round having won two-three at Dartford, drawn two-two at Gosport Borough then won the replay four two, before going out away to Boreham Wood one-nil.
Leading scorers so far for the Wings are Kain Adom and Tristam Abrahams with five goals each.
When the Iron hosted Welling last season on 25 October 2022, the Wings had made a good start to the season. The visitors took the lead on thirty one minutes through Adebayo Azeez, but Baris Altintop levelled three minutes later and Alfie Matthews then scored on forty thre minutes to give Braintree a half time lead. Further goals from Lamar Reynolds and Matt Rush would complete a resounding four-one win. Highlights here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRO5rDoM5BM
That had been the first home win against Welling since 2 February 2016 when a Dan Sparkes goal was enough to take the points despite Sean Marks seeing red on thirty three minutes.
With Will Davies out of the action on Saturday the Iron were unable to build on two successive four goal hauls against Havant and St Albans and rarely threatened a poor Sports side offensively, whilst the defence that has been strong throughout the season so far was found wanting with two big mistakes costing goals.
Angelo will be out unsure the lads bounce back at the first opportunity and edge into the play-off zone.
