Vanarama National League South
Braintree Town v Bath City
It’s back to VNLS action this coming Saturday and a home game with second placed Bath City.
Manager Jerry Gill has been at the helm for 6 years now, the former Birmingham City player also made over 200 appearances for the Twerton Park Club.
The Romans have made an impressive start to the season having finished in eleventh place in 2022/23 where their record was P 46 W 19 D 10 L 17 GF 64 GA 57 Points 67.
Top scorers in 2022/23 were Scott Wilson with twenty one goals, Cody Cooke with thirteen goals and Alex Fletcher with nine goals.
In their ten games so far this season their record is W 6 D 3 L1 GF 14 GA 7 Points 21.
Their only defeat in the League this season came in their third game where visitors Weston-Super-Mare hammered them by six goals to two. They are unbeaten on the road with wins at Eastbourne Borough (1-2),St Albans City (0-2) and Welling United (0-1) and two draws coming at Dartford (3-3) and Truro City (1-1).
They are still in this season’s F. A. Cup having won three-two at Larkhall and two-one at Weymouth last Saturday. They have been drawn away to Worthing in the fourth qualifying round.
The top three leading scorers this season are Scott Wilson with eight goals, Jordan Thomas with seven goals an Cody Cooke with four goals.
The two sides met at Clockhouse Way earlier this year on 21 January where the Iron won two-one. Jack Batten had given the visitors the lead in added time at the end of the first half, but goals from John White and an added time winner from Baris Altintop gave the home side all three points, highlights here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pmK1ylpkXk
Braintree currently sit in sixteenth pace in the VNLS with eleven points from their ten opening fixtures. They haven’t had a home League fixture in nearly a month having played five home matches so far with the one defeat by Maidstone United (1-2). Their best result to date was when table topping Worthing came calling on 2 September and were sent packing back to the south coast with a four-nil spanking. Two entertaining draws with Chippenham Town and Farnborough followed before the F. A. Cup intervened.
Last Saturdays dramatic comeback against Brackley Town with a stunning Aaron Blair volleyed winner should give the lads plenty of belief as they try to turn draws into wins and start climbing the table.
