A frustrating afternoon on a very hot afternoon, as the Iron took on Farnborough at the Rare Breed Meet Company Stadium. With Angelo back on the bench after his midweek ban, he went with the side that had earned a point at Tonbridge on Tuesday evening and there was a place on the bench for loan signing Ben Watt a midfielder from Norwich City, replacing Josh Dawodu. It wasn't a good start from the Iron as in the opening minute, they attack down the middle a ball is played towards the left hand side of the box, it was probably going to go towards the touchline but Mason slid in with a mis-timed challenge and the Farnborough player went down. Returning striker Alfie Pavey strode up to take it, putting it to Sims right, but it wasn't the cleanest strike and Sims saves it only to see the ball bounce up off him and Pavey stoops to head in the rebound. It didn't take long though for the Iron to level as they passed their way through the middle and right of the pitch with some neat one touch passing, as the ball is played into the are there's several chances blocked before the ball finally comes to Mason about 12 yards out and he redeems himself with a well hit side footed shot to level the score.
As in recent games at home the opposition are happy to try and pass their way through the pitch until they got a throw in, then they would hurl the ball into the box. Braintree are just edging the possession and trying to work the ball with Quantrell and Blackwell regularly swapping sides to keep Farnborough on their toes. Using the left flank with Will Davies as the target, the front man then links up with Blackwell in off the flank he tries an ambitious effort but it goes well over. Quantrell then goes down under pressure in the box with many in range asking for a penalty, but the ref isn't interested. Blair is next to try his luck from just outside the area trying to find the far top corner of thee net, but it's narrowly wide. Braintree break up a Farmborough attack and spring Blackwell on the right flank, he looks to be going clear until he is crudely taken out yards from the area, the ref deems a yellow card is sufficient. The next chance fell to Will Davies as he rose to meet a Blackwell free kick from deep out on the left, but he powers it over from 10 yards.
Farnborough finally get on the end of a long throw and Pendlebury's header comes off the post. In first half stoppage and another counter on the right and Mason scampers away with no real support and being closed down he hits a very ambitious effort which goes out past the far post for a goal kick. Farnborough should perhaps have scored with another effort following a long throw as the ball drops to Young on the edge of the box but he sends it just over the bar.
Early in the second half and Pavey almost nets a second getting on to a cross on the far post, but it goes over the bar. Braintree respond with Mason yet again finding himself well up the pitch, this time his long t=range effort is more controlled and goes narrowly wide of the far upright. Pavey is then denied as Braintree lose possession easily as they try to to break out from corner, the ball is played back to the right back who curls in a good cross, Pavey takes it down just in front of the near post spins and shoots only to be denied by Sims with a reactive block. The opposition are having the better of the half and hit the inside of the post with the Iron defence glad to see the ball fall to an orange shirt which leads to a great counter down the left Blair picks it up lays it inside and it's passed on again first time into space for the onrushing Quantrell
who cuts inside shoots low and is blocked by the keeper's foot. On the hour Braintree make their first change with Mason replaced by Watt, which means Leon Davies goes to right back. It's almost a dream start for the sub as the ball comes to him outside the box, one touch and shoots on target, but a great block from a Farnborough defender takes it over the crossbar. Quantrell is then withdrawn and Toby Stevenson comes on to play left midfield, he to then almost scores as he meets a right wing cross from Blair at the near post, but it goes agonisingly wide. There's an off the ball spat between Blair and Partington that sees both players booked. Braintree are looking more of a threat as the game enters it's final stages and Blackwell sets up Carson who cuts into the box only to see his shot deflected over. That's followed by an almighty scramble in and around the six yard box as players from both sides try to score/block before the keeper finally pounces on it. Will Davies is a late substitution for Matshazi and the match peters out to end all square.
Probably a fair result on overall play, with a bit of luck we may have edged it.
